View Full Version : Floorboards - Rear Question
Chris Edwards Jan 15th, 02, 02:36 AM I was sitting in the back seat of my car in the garage not too long ago (I never sat in the back, so I decided I wanted too. )
anywhoo, I noticed my rear floor is spongy... I have some rust, but it is time to replace it. the question is, I only need a rear piece would it be better to replace that section, or jerry rig it up with some sheet metal and just weld a plate in .
if its not that hard to install a rear floor piece then I will just do that. it doesnt have to be a butt weld or perfection, (it would be nice though)
what would U do???
thx.

KURT Jan 15th, 02, 02:56 AM If you just have heavy pitting on the inside of the pan and no rust throughs try putting a few coats of the silver POR-15. It adds quite a bit a strenght to thin rusted metal. If it doesn't work you can always replace the panel.
ragtopman Jan 16th, 02, 02:15 AM But if you do indeed have soft rear floors, you might want to take a look at the underside first and see if the rear floor reinforcement plate needs replaceing.
Ive seen it, and its not pretty. The rear pans rot out and the reinforcement plate(where the front of the leaf spring is attached)comes right thru the floor and before you know it, the leaf spring is inside your car.

RickD Jan 16th, 02, 02:17 AM POR15 also makes a reinforced cloth that would add additional strength.

cavemate Jan 16th, 02, 05:34 AM If it's soggy..replace the floor pan! Yes, if your back seat begins to look like a love seat of the 19th Century, your rear springs may be coming through the floor!

Chris Edwards Jan 16th, 02, 09:24 AM well i think the spring perch is fine, its just in the base of the floorpan like where your feet go. I did some further digging , and it looks like the drain plug thing failed, the entire area around it is rusted out. I can punch it and shove my hand through it, I guess I will have to replace that area, so I might as well do the whole pan I guess.
I also noticed the front toeboard seems to be rusty too, looks like someone did the hillbilly repair long ago and welded some sheet metal in the front floor, right overtop the orig floor, thats why I couldnt tell, so I will have to do these too..
Bummer

RockyMtnRacer Jan 16th, 02, 10:01 AM Ahhh.... a perfect excuse to buy some new tools! "Sweetie, I can do this job the RIGHT way and save a lot of money if I can just buy... a MIG welder, and a new compressor and a cutoff wheel and a little grinder and maybe one of those plasma cutters.... I swear it'll be cheaper this way! Oh, and this will be the last big money I spend on the car - I promise!"
