I have a '69 that the previous owner sanded the paint off of the tailpan..and then let it sit outside... now theres suface rust on it. How would you prepare this suface for paint. I would use POR15 if it were the firewall or undercarriage, but this is a outside surface...any ideas?

You can clean it with a Metal Prep and a 3m Scotch pad, prime then paint.

Overanxious, I have a question. Would he want to spray it with self-etching primer since it is going over bare metal.
Thanks,
Kyle

Thanks,
Kyle I'm new to this stuff, but that is what I have been told would be best to use on bare metal.

If it were me I'd clean it up well as described, maybe even do some light abrasive blasting to get the rust off if it has any pits, then use the self etching primer followed by a filling primer of some sort to even out the surface imperfections. Proceed with normal painting from there.
