View Full Version : 69 camaro coupe rear spring removal Help
bigsteve Apr 22nd, 07, 02:09 PM Have a 69 coupe that I am trying to remove the rear springs I have the three bolts removed from the front brackets ant the car is suported by a 4x4 across the under side of the car just before the front spring brackets & a hyd jack under the rear axel. Problem is the brackets still will not come off the frame is it the small bent tab that goes in the frame on the front bracket or am I doing somethin wrong? any help would be great Thanks Steve
go2fast Apr 22nd, 07, 02:52 PM Just pry it off.
bigsteve Apr 22nd, 07, 04:14 PM When I pry the springs they still have tension, I have the shocks off but could the emergency brake cables be causing a problem? thanks Steve
pdq67 Apr 22nd, 07, 04:40 PM If you have her up in the air good and SAFE then undo the shackles and support the rearend housing up as you do it and all will come right apart!!
Usually, the damn front spring mounts three bolts clip-nuts break and we have to grind the heads of all 6 bolts to get the front mounts off!!
What pain and ask me how I know, my 4.5" cheap HFT angle grinder in hand!!!
And if you do have to grind them off, use GOOD SAFETY eye and nose equipment or you may be digging steel outta your eye's!!

bigsteve Apr 22nd, 07, 05:03 PM Hi, what is D&R? thanks
JimM Apr 22nd, 07, 06:02 PM http://www.drclassic.com A good repor house in west suburban chicago, a big outfit like Ricks, whom I'm sure has to too.
Form my understanding, you are trying to remove the front of the spring with the back still attached?
It can be done. You need to get all the tension off the springs, let them hang, and you'll be able to pop that tab off.
Getting it back on is harder. It took me quite a bit of prying and cursing to get those tabs back in the slots... the whole thing wants to shift forward on the shackles, and it got to be shifted back to get it to line up.
bigsteve Apr 22nd, 07, 06:57 PM Sounds like the easy way is to unbolt the shackles if I do it this way when I install the rear should the front bracket or rear shackles of the springs be installed first? thanks Steve
Kamcoman Apr 22nd, 07, 08:39 PM To remove: unbolt rear shackles first, then front spring mounts. To install: front mounts first, then rear shackles.

bigsteve Apr 23rd, 07, 02:20 PM Another question is the left front leaf spring bracket from a 1970 to 81 camaro the same as the front left leaf spring bracket for a 1969 camaro?
pdq67 Apr 23rd, 07, 05:24 PM I don't think so.. Anybody know for sure??
And the four "NOVA" cars bracket is different too! I think it is taller is all so please check me here????????

tgifford5 Apr 23rd, 07, 09:04 PM I thought from the posts that I read you were to remove, from the front to the back and replace, back to the front. That is what I did. No problems. I did it this winter on my 69. If you got the front perches off without spinning the J-nuts I would suggest replacing them now. I have read many a post of those who have spun theirs. When I did mine I was good until the last one. That was enough for me. So I replaced them all. The good ones are stamped with a CIP. The brake and emergency cable lines should not be causing an issue.
Phx 69 camaro Apr 23rd, 07, 11:12 PM My 69 was supported on jacks and I hit around it with a air hammer
a few times and it popped right out. ;)
bigsteve Apr 24th, 07, 03:00 PM Does anyone know if the 1968 and 1969 camaro use the same type of front left hand side leaf spring bracket? thanks Steve
bigsteve Apr 24th, 07, 03:55 PM Looks like the rear shackles need new rubber bushings and lower bolt on one side is a threaded rod with a nut on each side. Does moog sell a bushing kit for the shackle and does it include the front bushings? thanks Steve
