: Looking for Cam Suggestions

Hello All,

I am looking for a cam suggestion for my setup.
I am in the process of swapping heads and here is what I will have:

397010 4 bolt Block
3947041 Heads w/ 2.02 & 1.6 stainless valves, mild porting.
Edelbrock Performer intake
Holley 4150 650 Vac Sec, Elec Choke, Dual Feed (Model 80783C)
Power Brakes
Factory A/C

And I will be removing my Hooker Comps and Flowmaster duals and returning to manifolds and a repo aluminumized Dual Exhaust system. You can thank the touchy neighbors for this last change.

The cam I am considering is the old:
3896929 Hyd. - 195/202 - .390/.410 - 112 - 327 300 HP (new part# 12364051)

I believe this cam makes good low end torque AND breathes well w/ decent heads to 6K rpm. I am also considering Comp Cam's HE268. It's also an oldy but a goodie. It's been a while and I forget, is the idle fairy choppy on an HE268 ?

My concerns are decent power, but with good vacuum and a decent idle that can support factory A/C.

Any comments or other suggestions ?

What about Comps XE268H or Lunati's Voodoo
60103. Both should give you more power and torque while still pulling as much vacuum.

My .02 would be to call Comp Cams like I did and they asked for all the info including the axle gear ratio and it looks like we have a similar package except I am running 3.77 gears behind a m20 trans. The answer from them was the 268 with .477 lift would make a good Idle and have enough vacuum to make it streetable.

What gear/tranny/convertor are you using?

Oops....duh...

I'm running a T350 and 3.23 gears.

I may install a Moser 3.73 12 bolt in a year or two also.
I want to keep that under consideration for cam selection too.

I was starting to look at the L46 350/350 cam, but noticed that motor wasn't available with an AT & A/C. Anbody know if the idle and vacuum of an L46 cam will support an AT, Power Brakes and A/C ?

Is anybody here running the 051 or 962 cam ?

Or is anyone running the HE268 ? (what is the difference to the XE268 ?)

In particular I'm looking for setups with an AT, Power Brakes and A/C.

Thanks

The xtreme favors the exhaust side a little more to help balance the flow more and increase scavenging. Also the xtreme has a little faster ramp opening to keep the duration down to help with vacuum and still get high flow #'s.

Mark,
Please read my thread titled "Cam Suggestion for 69 SS350 Please", it's on the same forum page as this one right now. Travis gave me some good info and the 962 cam worked great for me.

My experience is that I had called Comp Cams, told them my application, and they said the XE 256 is the best cam for me. But the 962 cam really woke up the motor and it seems to run better too.

Yeah, I've been following that thread too.
And those are two of the cams I am considering.
I'll chime in on the other thread.

I've used the 962 cam and found it to be streetable due to the wide LSA. Sixteen inches of vacuum if I remember correctly.

Hi Everett,
Have you ever used the 962 cam with an automatic ? (and hopefuly power brakes and factory A/C)

It's starting to sound like the 962 and 151 cams may be too much for a decent idle with an AT.

Hi Everett,
Have you ever used the 962 cam with an automatic ? (and hopefuly power brakes and factory A/C)I had Powerglide with stock convertor, Q-jet, 3.73, no power accessories, and the combo propelled a 67 Camaro to 14.20's all day long.

Perfect, sounds like what I'm looking for.
And if the 962 was generating 16 inches of vacuum like you recall, then I should be fine with my T350, and Power Brakes.

Were L82 or L46 motors available with factory air ?

L48, yes, in Corvettes.

L48, yes, in Corvettes.

But I thought '69 L48 motors used the -929 cam ? (.390/.410 195/202)

Do you mean '75 L48 Vettes ?

(Thanks for the help....picking the correct cam is critical for a good street setup)
