Hey guys,

Im planning on getting a set of the 17" inch American Racing Torq-Thust II wheels for my 68 camaro...

What I'm wondering is for a 67-69 body camaro, what is the proper wheel size, width and backspacing for both the front and the back???

Also, what size tire would be the ones to get for those wheels front and back also to fit good???

I dont want to order a set and then they dont fit correctly.

Thanks.:)

I just got done putting a set of these wheels & tires on my 68 RS/SS. The sizes are as follows:
Front - 17"x7" w/5.5" back space, tire size P215/50ZR17
Rear - 17"x9.5" w/5.5" back space, tire size P275/40ZR17
Lug pattern for both wheels - 5 bolt on 4.75"
These fit my car perfectly and I have not have any problem with tire rub in the front or rear.

Mark68, do you have any pics of you car with the TT2?
are you stock ride height?

that's a lot of backspacing for the front. I usually do a 17 X 8" with 4.75" - 5" b.s. on the front, and a 245/45 tire. Depends on ride height, can be fairly low with the above combo, but not slammed.

This is what you want for the front

Front: 17x8 (4.75" backspacing) - 5x4.75 pattern (American Racing 505-7863)

Works with stock or lowered suspension

on all of my 1st gens, I went with:

8" wide fronts, 4.75 to 5.00 backspace (5.00 tucks in better)
10" wide rears, 5.50 backspace (can also use 9.5" wide with same backspace)
245 wide front tires
275 wide rear tires, or 285 wide with rolled fender lips

Thanks for all the help everyone. Since it seems as though alot of you have different opinions on what works and what doesent...Do any of you have photos with the size combo you are suggesting on your camaro so I can see how they look?

Thanks guys

I will take a few pictures tonight and send them to you. Yes,I am at stock height. I did make a mistake on the back spacing on the fronts. They are 5.0" instead of the 5.5". I know there are a lot of opinions about sizes but mine are on the car and working so you decide who's right!
Could you please send me your e-mail address, so I can forward you the pic's? Here's mine: lindsmar@comcast.net

I'm about to purchase the same combo for my 67. I thought the best combo from searching on here was front 235/45/17 (17X8 w/4.75bs) and rear 255/40/17 (17x8 w/4.75bs). I've also read 17x9.5 w/5.5bs for the rear, does this fit better? PLEASE let me know if I'm mistaken. Sorry, not trying to hi-jack, hopefully will help us both out. :)

I'm in the same boat, I"m ready to order and I'm comparing to the TT chrome versions (beleive the are called TT M. They are backordered so they are hard to find. I'm not sure what backspace options they have (they say 0 offset... and not sure what that means in terms of backspace but I think it's simple 4" backspace) and am worried which might force me to just order the TT2's. So if the backspace is really 4" on the M's and not 4.75 like the TT2's, doesn't that mean the M's will stick out more and will that look ok?

Why would you put 255/40 on the back on the same size rim?

Tex67
Apr 25th, 07, 07:33 PM
255's are wider. I looked up 17X9.5 and the only backspacing is 6.5 and 7". This isn't too much backspace???

I just found out that a 0 offset on a 8" rim is 4.5" backspace, so i guess if 4.75 works on the TT2's then TTM's should be ok, right?

WOW! Your camaro does look awesome Brian! Thanks for posting the photos.:)
Those wheels and tires look great on your camaro...
By the way, off topic but i have to ask, what color is that which you painted your car? I plan on doing blue paint w/white stripes on my 68 and that color on yours looks amazing.

Well I'm a little bias, I don't believe this setup would look as good on a 68 hahahahhaha, sorry I just had to! I prefer the wheel wells of a 69...

I don't have any pictures yet, but I have 17x7 in the front with 225/45/17 4.5 backspace and 17x9.5 with 275/40/17 5.5 backspace in the rear. Billet Street Stars. I had to add a 1/4 spacer on the drivers side to stop a rub. I also rolled the fenders. It may have fit but REALLY close. I did that before I got the tires bacause I was bored. The fronts fit great and look tough. I have Have a 2 inch drop in the front and 1.5 in the rear. I may lower the rear another 1/2 inch.

I rolled my inner fender lips on my 68 in the rear. I havnt seen one with 285s yet though on a 68...
Everyone has been telling me that 275s will be the widest you can go without having to tub the rear?...
Do you have any photos of one with 285s in the rear by chance?

Based on what everyoine is saying, so far it looks like the majority rear setup is a:
REAR: 17 X 9.5 with 5.5" backspacing and a 275/40/17 Tire. That looks great on all of your rides for photos that were provided. Also looks like that is probably about the max amount of tire and wheel to fit up in a 67-69 camaro rear wheel well.

For the front however, Seems like there are all types of different combos everyone is running for wheels and tires...

Mark sent me some photos of his camaro with his wheel tire combo and his car looks great!
For the front, he said that hes running a:
FRONT: 17 X 7 with 5" backspace with P215/50z/17 tires.

Brians Blue 69 and ChevyThunders camaros look great too. Brian said he is running a:
FRONT: 17 X 8 with 4.75 backspace wheels combo and a 235/45WR17 tire.

I know there were a few other combos from other members, but Im just going off the ones with the photos Ive seen for now.
Brian and Chevythunder, do either of you have photos of your cars from the front angle so to see how wide the tire looks and how the backspacing appears on the wheel combo with the front?
Also, do any other memebers have photos for their front ride setup?

Im planning on buying the wheels and tires next week...While I think I will go with the 17 X 9.5 wheel and the 275/40/17 tire for the back, Im still trying to decide which route im going to go for the front.

Thanks for the help guys!

I've always done the 17 X 8" 4.75-5" b.s. on the front with 245/45's. Better looking balance for the rear 275's in my opinion.

Hey Tex, Did you ever pick up that set of wheels for your Camaro? I would like to see how they look on your car and how you like them so far.
Let me know when you have a chance.

I am considering between the 235/45/17 and the 225/45/17 for the front of my 68 Camaro...
Also trying to decide if either the 225 or the 235 tire would work better with a 17x7 or a 17x8 wheel?

Thanks.

:confused:THIS REPLY IS TO BRIAN AND HIS 69. SO I AM KIND OF NEW TO THE SITE, BUT I HAVE BEEN READING ALL OF THE POSTS I SEE ON HOW BIG A WHEEL YOU CAN PUT ON A FIRST GEN CAMARO. DID YOU HAVE TO TUB OR MINI TUB YOU 69? THAT SEEMS LIKE A LOT OF WHEEL FOR THE BACK, BUT I GUESS WITH THE RIGHT BACKSPACING THEN IT WOULD WORK. RITE NOW I AM LOOKIN AT 16X8 FOT THE BACK OF MY 67 AND 16X7S FOR THE FRONT. I AM TRYING TO GET AS MUCH WHEEL WITHOUT HAVING TO WORRY ABOUT ANY SORT OF RUB UP FRONT, OR OUT BACK. I AM DEFINITELY IN LOVE WITH THE TTS, I AM JUST A LIL WORRIED THAT I AM NOT GONNA CHOOSE THE CORRECT SET UP. THE WAY I SEE IT, IS I CAN GET 8S ON THE FRONT AN BACK, WITH 4.75 BACKSPACING AND NOT HAVE TO WORRY. PLEASE LET ME KNOW AS SOON AS YOU READ THIS.

My fender wells lips are bent in to handle the 275 without rubbing, if you don't want to alter anything I recommend 255's

I only have a front angle with the old 14 x 7 rallys. Here iit is - I guess you could use your imagination. I'll have the car out this weekend and take a photo.

I think Summit sells lowering blocks. I made my own. I bought a chunk of plate aluminum and cut them on a bandsaw to 5" x 2 1/4". I drilled a 3/8" hole through the center. I use the center bolt on the leaf springs to hold them in place.

Im running 18's on mine but they are pretty much the height as the 17's mntioned ealier. My car is lowered 2" in front and 3" in rear. The first set of wheel I got were 18x8's with 4.75" bs. Tires were 245/40/18's. Suckers rub pretty bad on the outside lip of the fender. Tore up one tire pretty good. So they took them back and got me some 18x8's with 5" bs. This has been fine and no rubbing. The rears are 18x10's with 5.75" bs on 275/40/18's. My fender lips are trimmed and its a tight fit. But....it looks killer!
