: Upolstery Glue
gheatly May 10th, 02, 11:58 AM What kind of glue should I use to finish my door panels?
I have some Permatex "All Purpose Spray Adhesive" that I'm trying to use. This is what they said to use at Pep Boys so I tried it. However, this stuff won't hold the vinyl down. It is very tacky and will hold for maybe 5 minutes and then it lets go. I can then press the vinyl in place again and it will hold anpother 5 minutes and let go. I sprayed the stuff about an hour ago and it still has not dried. Am I using the wrong stuff? The number on the can is 82019.
Kyvox May 10th, 02, 12:54 PM 3M makes a spray adhesive that is probably better than what you have. Or you could get some contact cement from a hardware store. Apply it to both surfaces and let it dry, then press the parts together. Be sure that they are perfectly aligned before letting the parts touch each other.
stingr69 May 10th, 02, 02:02 PM 3M black weatherstrip adhesive works well for that. Put it on one side and press together, pull apart for a few seconds or so to get stringy and tacky then press back together and that is it. Works for me.

kurt6325 May 10th, 02, 03:19 PM If you use the 3M spray adhesive, make sure you get the 3M-90. It's much better than the 3M-77.
302XRAM May 10th, 02, 03:49 PM Go to hardware store and buy a can of contact cement...works great.

chevyboy68 May 10th, 02, 03:55 PM both the 3M 90 and 70 work great. They work better than any of the other brands of spray adhesives I have tried. I had the same dilema
cbrooks May 11th, 02, 07:04 AM Agree with 302xram. Contact cement is great just follow the directions to the T. You are supposed to put it on both peices to be glued together, let it set for about twenty minutes (it will get real tacky ) then put them together. It makes a very good bond.
Good Luck,
Chris
ragtopman May 12th, 02, 02:58 PM The biggest mistake that people make when using the upholstery glues, is not letting BOTH sides that you have put glue on 'gas out'.
The reason it does'nt hold is after you put the glue on, most people then install the fabric, and the solvents have'nt had a chance to escape, hence, it does'nt hold.

gheatly May 12th, 02, 03:24 PM I figured it out. The stuff I was using also said on the can "repositionable". Apparently, it gets real tacky and doesn't dry. I went to another parts store and bought the Permatex "Heavy Duty Headliner Glue" and it worked great.
Everyone is right - apply glue to both the vinyl and the metal side panel and wait 5-10 minutes (about the time the glue no longer stinks) and then slowly apply the vinyl to the panel. It's not coming off now!
Wes V May 13th, 02, 06:54 AM 3M Super 77 is the best!
Contact cement works well, however if you try applying it to foam, it will melt the foam.
A light coat of 77 will not soften the foam.
