View Full Version : Spring Codes - Do they differ between 325,350,375 hp big blocks
BadaSS69 Apr 26th, 07, 08:43 PM I am in the process of trying to figure the original intentions GM had with my Camaro. It is a Van Nuyes car, no build sheet, and early trim tag. I was going through the front end bushings and found the spring sticker. It read: 3955723 YP, any info on this? I can tell they are big block springs just by looking at them, does this code tell what hp rating it had???
Mark C Apr 26th, 07, 09:22 PM The YP spring is the standard front for a big block (any one) coupe with 181 to 262 lbs worth of options added to the front end, or a convertible big block with 99 to 180 lbs added to the front end.
Its also the heavy duty front spring for an L48 350 coupe with 181 to 262 lbs of options added to the front end, or the heavy duty spring for a convertible with a 307 or 327 ci engine with 99 to 180 lbs worth of options added to the front end.
Springs were selected by a computer in 69 based soley on the weight over the front end (and rear end) of the car. Weight was affected by variables like if the car is a coupe, or convertible, big block or small block and the number and type of options on the car. There are other posts on here somewhere with the weights added or deleted to the front and rear of the car, by the various options. YH, YM, and YP springs are serviced by a single part number of 3955722 spring in the 69 P&A manual (GM didn't carry all of the possible production springs in their service lines).
BadaSS69 Apr 27th, 07, 09:37 AM Too bad they didn't have distinctions between which type of motor (350, 396, 427) that they put YM, YH, or YP on since they are all in the same weight catagory with their part #. Oh well, thanks for your help.
Mark C Apr 27th, 07, 10:20 AM One of the only difference in the body of the car between a 69 L78 and the L34/L35's is that the L78 has a single 3/8" fuel line, while the other two have a 3/8" supply line and 5/16" return line. This was because the L78 used a holley carb, while the other two models used rochesters. Of course everything but the L48, L34, L35, and LM1 used the single fuel line from the factory too, so you would really want some kind of paperwork to prove what the car was originally. Documentation is king, and as more clones and cars with fake paperwork, trim tags and restamped components show up it will become increasingly important.
L72/RS Apr 27th, 07, 10:31 AM Mark,
I searched for the spring/weight thread and couldn't locate it.
How long ago was it posted?
Trying to find the part # for my front springs "HQ". Or it might be "QH", can't remember right now.
Thanks,
Eric
BadaSS69 Apr 27th, 07, 10:51 AM I agree- Documentation is king...I wish I had some. I am not really trying to prove (atleast to anyone but myself) what my car is, I just feel that since it is in such unmolested shape it should go back to original. It does have a single fuel line (I am sure this could have been changed over the years) and I have found a correct month L78 block. Maybe I'm hoping for the best, or maybe I'll guess correctly. Thanks for your input
Mark C Apr 27th, 07, 03:18 PM Sorry wasn't here, it was over on the CRG forum;

I still think there is one on this site too, from a couple of years ago.
