View Full Version : Powder Coaters Inside

I've been working with the almost chrome from eastwood for 6 months or so and can't seem to apply clear to it without making it looking gray metallic.

Does anybody have a secret or tip I can try? I have tryed everything, low temp clear, regular clear, paint clear, applying the clear while the chrome is still hot, applying the chrome powder & then the clear powder and then baking, AND nothing works. The pieces look great after the chrome but when the clear is applied, it is almost identical to the color of my 69 Camaro (Cortez Silver) .

All help is appreciated, Thanks!

I too have seen this and a friend has also told me the same thing, basically. His big complaint is that it turns “yellow”. What he has done is to just leave it as is, with out a clear coat of any kind. It will ware off quicker this way, but he just plans on coating it again…and again… and again.
I have been staying with black, a textured gray silver and some of the see through colors (that need a almost chrome base coat).

Wildkatz -

How soon do you need to know? One of my buddies here local ran Eastwoods R&D Department, and has tons of Hot Coat knowledge (and he's a Camaro nut to boot).

We did the intake on my 68 with Near Chrome when Eastwood was still developing that powder, around 1998. It has been so long since we did it, I can't remember if we cleared it or not, but it isn't yellowed at all and still looks great.

I wasn't planning to talk to Mark this week, but if it is urgent, I'll call special. Let me know.

Hey Eric, I don't want you to make any special calls or anything. I really appreciate it.

Thanks

i also had problems with clear. it really dosent work imo, i got lucky a couple of times but for the most part it seems that it cant cure over the second coat of powder. i talked to eastwood a few times and they gave suggestions (the same ones you mentioned) and i tryed everything you did and nothing worked. if you dont clear it it will look good for a while but eventually it will look very gray. its a great system for certain colors, but be carefull of the grays like cast iron this is very porus and it will rust thru eventually. i seem to be having some luck with the primer, it is good insurance.
