was helping my brother test some wiring on his car and we had the key turned on for a couple hours in the on position. it is a 327 with old points distributor with the ceramic resistor. when we tried to start the car it wouldn't start. the ceramic resistor was hot and the coil was warm. we changed out the coil and it fired right up. would leaving the key on for this long without the engine running burn out the coil?

I had a 64 stepside pickup that used to do the same thing. I was 16 at the time and would turn the key on to listen to the radio.....I think I burned up 3 coils, 'til I figured out what was going on:noway:

So, to answer your question, yes, I think that is likely, but maybe someone else will chime in to give a more technical explanation.

Exactly! If you're lucky and the points are open, it won't hurt anything; however, if they're closed, you can fry the coil (and the points).

:beers:

Which is why there was not much making out in a 55-57 chevy as they did not have accy side side ing switches to play the smooth music. Right? Anybody else with me?
