Anyone around there know of a "Basic transportation" type reliable car available for $5k or less?

Park Ave, 530-343-5565. He has "some" cars in that price range.
I did look in our local paper for that price range. There is a private party car, 01 Dodge Intrepid 65k miles, $5800 OBO, 530-518-4242.
I'll keep my eyes open.
