Is there any way you can ID a 302 block without seeing the "DZ" on the front pad or without tearing the motor appart? The engine is in the car and the engine stamp is covered with paint. I don't want to scrape off the paint if I don't have to.

Thanks,
Jesse

Can't be an original 302 block for sure w/o the DZ, MO or MP stamp (depending on year). It might be some sort of a 302 if you can see the crank flange with the notch.

Well, if you had a piston volume checker or PG tool , plus looking at harmonic balancer, block numbers, block vin numbers near oil filter, pulling dust pan and looking at crank flange, you might just get within 50% accuracy, maybe. Be easier to scrap a little paint off , unless it's not allowed?

No such thing as a "302 block" - it's the same block used for many other applications; the only thing that makes it a "302" is the crank, rods, pistons, cam, and heads assembled to it, and the suffix stamped on the pad later - there's nothing "special" about the block.

Hi If I Had Your Block It Would Be Very Speacil ??? To Check To See If It Is A 69z Block Look At The Crank Balancer And Take Off The Fly Wheel Cover To Check For The Right Crank Shaft They Are Both Speacil For A Z28

The reason why I am asking is that a friend of mine is looking at a '68 Camaro for sale. The owner claims the engine is an original '69 DZ 302. I think I'll tell him to ask the owner if he can carefully scrape the paint off then engine. If he does buy it and it is indeed a '69 302 I'll post the numbers here if anyone is interested.

Just beware. DZ stamping can be cloned as well as motor vin #'s . This board can tell you pretty much what you have, 99% of the time. I have seen restamps and without opening motor up, checking crank #s, piston #'s,,, you CAN be scammed. Seems people will jump out at anything stamped or labeled DZ, even ashtrays. So roll the dice.

Your last statment mentioned it was a 1968 camaro. The engine should be a MO not a DZ. Doubt someone found a DZ engine and put it in a 1968 z28.

Mine had one in it, but if the guy means original to the car, it's definitely not

But if its a complete 69 DZ, think of what you could buy with it? Who knows, the owner could be out there somewhere.
