So, after weeks of hard work, I made it back to the track tonight.
2 and only 2 changes.
New rebuilt (by me) trans. (TH400) Works perfect BTW....:hurray: (Thanks 40 Coupe)
3.73 gears replaced the 4.10's.
It was cold, mid 40's. And rained hard right before the track opened. But it cleared up and the track looked good. In fact, for a street legal night, they used the VHT several times....but only the first 10 feet or so. (I'm betting it was too cold for the VHT to work)
I was expecting the car to dead hook like it did all last year....especially with the taller rear gear.
Wrong-o-bucko! Not even close.
First pass, blew the tires off, lifted big time got it in second and ran it to the finish line. 10.79 @ 130.......1.8 60ft? Sheesh.
Next hit, blew the tires off again, shuddered big time. Shifted to second right away and ran a 10.39 @ 132.
The next 3 hits were worse at the hit and I coasted the rest of the run.
Man, last season, the car hardly turned a tire. 60 fts were 1.41 to 1.37.
Although I had the rear end out of the car, I didn't mess with the CalTrac settings. Verified that they were correct at the track tonight.
So, either the Hoosier Radials died (got hard) over the winter, (they were in the basement), or it was just too cold and the track was junk! I mean worse than I've ever raced on. Folks have said get the radials spinning good and it's over.....that was the case tonight.
Or maybe the new fresh trans just works better? I dunno.
My buddies said the car picked the wheels up 6", then blew the tires off.
I should have slowed the front shocks way down, and moved the CalTracs to the bottom hole to reduce the hit. We only had 15 min between runs though. Maybe I'll try that tomorrow night.
So the gear change.
Pretty interesting. Car seems to loaf down the freeway now. It for sure works the converter harder in normal driving.
What I was after was slowing the engine down in the lights. Worked exactly according to plan.
According to the tach, I'm now going through at 6300, down 600 rpm just like predicted. And I ran 132 with a lift on the leave. So I think 134 will come when I can keep my foot in it all the way.
My best 60 ft tonight was a pathetic 1.58....against a normal of 1.4. I believe it will 60ft the same as before. Love that big block torque!
Gotta tell you, the thing is an animal!
And pump gas ($3.63/gal) costs as much as race fuel used to! Oregon enjoys some of the highest prices in the nation. Glad this isn't my daily driver!
I'll post more after I run some more. Interesting stuff for sure!
