View Full Version : Would it be stupid?
01somta May 5th, 07, 10:39 AM I found a real good deal on a solid 68 6cyl. car within 1hr. of me, would it be stupid/crazy to build a protouring car out of a orig. 6cyl. car? Should I wait and find a 8cyl. and pay a little bit more? Would it be harder to sell later on? Would the IFS and 4 link kits bolt up just fine? Would the RS headlight conversion work? Would it be hard to put in a sbc?
There is no value difference in a V8 or I6 once the car has been modified enough to be called a pro-touring car. The body's the same, the subframe is the same, the interior is the same... Different engines fit by changing frame mounts and motor mounts. They made RS I6 cars just like they did V8's. The biggest difference in a 6cyl car and a V8 once you remove the drive train is the number on a tag that says it's a 6 not an 8. If that effects the value of a pro-touring car it's pure hype and vanity on the buyer and sellers part. You might be able to pick up a I6 car for a bit less than a V8 but again what the tag says doesn't matter.

That's is what I was thinking, thanks for the encouragement. :hurray: . I am hoping to pick the car up for around $3k-3,500k and have about 10k to put into it imediately. I starting thinking after posting this thread that a clone is a clone no matter if it is an original 6cyl or 8cyl., and the quality of parts and work will determine the value of the car. So after removing drivetrain everything else is the same, anything sold for the v8 cars would definetly work on a I6.
foreverlookin May 5th, 07, 04:53 PM Go for it thats a great price!
68sixspeed May 6th, 07, 06:33 PM yes, 6 cyl's are the way to go for custom/mods, - I almost feel bad that my '68 is as modified as it is, but I was smart enough to save the #'s motor, tranny, and rear end 15 years ago in case I ever wanted to go back.... the '69 I just started on is a 6cyl for the "no guilt" reason!
Pacecarjeff May 6th, 07, 06:48 PM If you must build a PT car.
starting with a 6cyl is the right way to go. IMO
ew68bb May 6th, 07, 07:38 PM That's exactly what I did. Found an original 6 cyl with new paint, no rust, and a brand new interior. Had a "tired" 454 in it and a 10 bolt. Got it for 20k but the body and interior is flawless. Underside in great shape. Had no guilt doing the following;
moser 12 bolt, 555 BBC, Baer brakes, Hotchkis TVS, 17" TT II's,hydroboost, etc., etc., etc.
Bottom line,,,,,,,,,,,,go for it!
blainedoe May 6th, 07, 10:43 PM Build it and have some good clean fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GO FOR IT!:hurray:
