Hello friends- It seems as though I need a new clutch. I was out over the weekend "joy-riding" in my camaro and suddenly began hearing a faint tapping/knocking sound as I let out the clutch. It happens in 1st/2nd/3rd also in neutral but not really in 4th, I crawled home and into the garage. I figured a clutch adjustment (bare in mind...I am not knowledgable at all in things automotive.) so jacked her up and attempted to make an adjustment. I turned the adj. rod both ways and the sound either got worse or stayed the same. I asked a mechanic friend over and he also was puzzled as to the sound, he mentioned it didn't sound like the T/O bearing....no squeel just a tap?
I figured now is as good a time as any to get the tranny rebuilt (has some oil leakage issues) and also a new clutch. The car is a 396/325 SS with what appears to be an M20 trans, Could you toss out recommendations on what parts to go with? I want to keep the car original but want "The Good Stuff"......Specifically the brand names I should insist on as replacement parts.
Thanks

I had a "tapping" kind of sound come from a messed up pressure plate that had uneven finger heights. when the release bearing made contact, it would make the noise. just an idea for you.

Bill, you are the man......I PM'd you, I will take either one. Are they just the cases or is it an intact trans (doesn't matter)? I misplaced your contact info, please call me.
Thanks

Well friends - It was both that were bad, I knew the trans was not a matching trans to my car so being I needed some new gears....With the help of Bill (jaguareats) and this site I now have a rebuilt trans with the proper castings for my car. I opted to pick up the case that had no vin or date stampings anywhere on it. I am not going to try and pass this off as a numbers matching/born with component but feel much better now having the proper 5010 case.
Thanks again Bill and TC for everything............

Whoa Bill, step back a second. Sorry if you think I took advantage of you, I did not.
You offered to come and listen to my car and offered your experienced opinion. Your car is at a shop literally a few blocks away from my home and you were coming here anyway. For that I gave you $25 for gas even though you were coming here anyway. You were in my garage for 15 minutes and gone.
While here yes, you offered to take my car and rebuild the trans but I never agreed to that. The guy who had the trans cases was selling them anyway and you hooked us up, because of this I was not aware that I owed you the contract to rebuild my trans. Sorry if you felt that he took advantage of you inspecting his motor for him, I was not aware that you felt that way.
We never spoke about a price so saying I opted for the "cheaper" means of getting my trans done is not accurate. I just went with a different shop.....One that was local to me and that I felt could do a decent job. I am sure that you are good at what you do and do it well, I would not hesitate recommending you to anyone.
In closing....I can only hope you can get past this as you have plenty of knoweldge about these cars for which would be a shame to lose.
