I was wondering if anyone knew if Flowmaster sells the tailpipes from their kit 17139 by themselves? Ive been looking for them all over the web and havent come accross anyone that does.

My old tranverse muffler blew over the weekend and my plan is to replace it with two Borla mufflers and and a new set of tailpipes. Then later do the headers, X Pipe and the rest of the pipeing. As tempting a price the entire American Thunder System is I think I want to stay away from the flowmaster 40 series muffler to avoid all the drone noise complaints.

They used to, but I'm not finding today searching both at summit and flowmaster, all I'm finding is the "dump behind the wheel" 67 style pipes in both 2.5 & 3".

Bet you could but the 19139 system AND a pair of Borla's, then sell the flow 40's to get some of your $$ back. That's what I run on my vert, it's sweet.

Yeah thats a possibility Jim. I just got off the phone with Flowmaster and they said they do not sell the pipes seperate at all. The only time they will make them seperate is when they need to replace a set for a customer who has already purchased the kit.

I told they guy what kit I was looking at for my 68 and he seemed very adamit that this kit wouldnt fit on a 68 and thats why its listed for a 69 only. I told him I have read of several people installing the 17139 kit on their 68s and with little to no problems what so ever.

Hey Jim, what Borla muffler did you end up going with? The XR-1 series or Turbo, or one of their others?

Might want to look at flowmaster 17104 transverse kit. 2.5 pipes out back . What I run.

BOR-40653 MUFFLER TURBO OFFSET/CENTER A Shipped on 01/24/07 $111.99 2 $223.98

I wonder if I could find my reciept for the flow system, tell them the pipes rusted out?
Dunno, it's been 6 or 7 years. Should be in the file, but it's 3" thick at this point!

The 17139 system fits fine on 67 & 68. The ONLY difference between the 17129 (67-68) and 17139 (69) kits is the tailpipe style, the xx139 has the full tailpipes and the xx129 dumps behind the tire.

Also both will fit fine on any 67-69 vert if you're prepared to deal with the x-brace. I used a hotchkiss.

Jim, will the 17139 fit on a 68 vert with the hotchkis x-bracket? I just got back my new 383 and pulled my old engine. Bought dynotech coated headers and am looking to put a new exhaust on it. WHat do you think?

To the OP, I found this site which lists part numbers on the diagram for the flowmaster systems... You're looking for 16152 and 16153. Looks like the hangers are different between the "15129" and "15139" systems as well....

Looked for a pic... there's one on the board somewhere, but yes. Someone told me the hotchkiss brace was made to fit the flow system, the way mine went on, I believe it. When I did my system6 years ago, we welded it solid (except for the mufflers) and left the x-brace off cause it wouldn't go back on. The hotchkiss brace fit like it was made for those pipes.

Flowmaster # FLO-15801 $102.88
Individual numbers on the pipes are Left: 15112 Right: 15111

Here they are, 2.5" tail pipes, mandrel bent, tail pipes run all the way to the back, not dump style. You can trim the tips for a mild "baloney cut" which looks nice.

We have these on our 73 Camaro, the listing says they fit first gen's too. Use with center outlet mufflers.

unless the pic doesn't match the product, they don't look right... at least I see no sign of the welded on SS tips.

I've got a set of the 15801's sitting in the garage waiting to go on my '68. I got offset outlet mufflers based on posts from Brian Lewis (http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=16743).

The stainless tipped pipes from the 17139 kit would have been nicer.

I modified Don's link and brought up the install instructions for the 17139 kit.
Tailpipe part numbers are:
16153 right
16152 left

These are the stainless tipped "to the rear pan" tailpipes made for a dual under the backseat muffler system.

If they exist separately, I can't find em.

Stainless tips would be nice, ours have no stainless tips but do go all the way to the back. They are aluminized steel. Offset outlet mufflers may work better on a first gen, Brian's setup looks nice I really wanted to use the offset in/out mufflers but didn't think it would fit that well.
You could add some stainless tips to these pipes.
David

Here's a photo that shows the tail pipe tips, they were a bit longer but I had the muffler shop trim them even with the rear valance panel and at the same angle.

David, Kools wheels up. This must be a nostalgic track? Flagger up ahead, no lights? All tractaction, no smoke. Right?:D

Not enough HP to do a wheels up, it's an autocross corner and where we tried running with no rear antiroll bar.:D

Here's a post I put in the wrong thread earlier today:
A couple of tips:

The Walker 3" muffler necks down to 2.5" inside, and does it pretty suddenly, it's better to use a 2.5" muffler and use a long taper cone reducer ahead of the muffler.

The 2.5" offset in, offset out, 14" muffler 17734 is higher flowing 420cfm vs 410cfm for the 17733 center outlet model we used that has offset in, center out. The Dyno Max Super Turbo series use internal U shaped flow guides inside that help turn the exhaust flow. David Vizard helped design and flow test these.

An X pipe is wonderful for performance, and makes the car more quiet, it purrs more like a Vette, but not everyone likes this sound. No X pipe has more of a roar due to the uneven pulses.

Where ever you neck down from headers at 3" to 2.5" mufflers, do it as far back as possible, the exhaust get's colder/denser. Use the Flowmaster long tapered reducers for a nice transition. Dr Gas also makes an X pipe that has 3" inlets and 2.5" outlets.

Surprised the PYPES 2 1/2" (304 Stainless) system with X-pipe and transverse muffler hasnt been mentioned here. This 67-81 Camaro system has polished stainless tailpipes available.

I'm interested in buying myself, but still not sure IF I will like the look of tailpipes...........(relative to OEM look)

Well heres my bind. My old tranverse muffler blew on the car last weekend and Ive been want to replace the setup with a whole new header back system. The only thing stopping me is really my current headers. I will eventally swap the current flowtech long tubes out for a set of the Throleys.

I dont know how bad I will be with cutting the pipes to fit the Flowtechs from the new system then once I replace the headers be worried with and distance or alighment issues to fit the new headers. Will this be a major problem of should any good exhaust shop be able to hook up the new headers to the exsisting pipes going back.

Lee, I went from Hookers 2451 3" collector to Thorley 2.5 collector and just had muffler shop weld up my old slip on to old flowmaster set up. I will send you photos later this evening so you can get an idea of what they look like.
