When up to Rhinebeck NY this past weekend for the car show at Duchess COunty Fairgrounds, Had a great time. We arrive on Friday, Saturday night get a phone call from oldest son (he's 29) wants to talk to mom, very odd they always talk to dad first if they have problems, Moms a screamer then calms down and THEN deals with the crisis. Dad on the other hand is the calm one from start to finish. So very odd that #1 son want to talk to mom. Seems he took the 67 for a ride, which is allowed no need to ask permission first, and blew up the rear end. Wants mom to tell dad on Sunday so maybe he won't ruin my whole weekend and maybe I find the pieces at the swap meet to fix it. Mom says stop worrying, it's only a thing, no one was hurt we'll fix it. So mom gets off the phone and of course tells me. So I called #1 son back and talk to him. He tells me he was doing a burnout (at least he was honest) and when he hit second gear the thing just stopped. I'm sure there is MUCH more to the story but that's all I'm getting. Anyway His younger brother goes with the trailer and the car wouldn't move forwards so they back it onto the trailer, son #2 says it was a very hairy ride back to the garage with all the weight on the back of the trailer but they got it back and put it up on our lift and started to take apart the rearend but when PIECES fell out they figured they better stop and wait for me. Now Guys this car has a real built up 69, 427 in it pushes probably close to 500hp with a ford 9 inch rear end with detroit locker and posi how he broke it is beyond me. Now my problem, I was able to get a new detroit locker from Summit Racing, new carrier bearing and races. I can't get a new cap for a race that measures O.D. 2.891. I have 2 more 9 inch rearend but they have 28 spline axels, and mine axels have a 31 spline. And summint says that they won't interchange. So where do I find a bearing retainer cap for a 31 spline O.D. 2.891 race?

Use one of your other cases. Summit doesn't know crap. It doesn't matter what spline axles were in it, the cases are either 2 7/8 bearing or 3 1/16 bearing. The bearing size that you use is all that matters. Either bearing will fit the locker so just use the right one for the case that you have. If the bearing cap is broke then it is very difficult to replace it and make everything work right. Just trash that case and use another one.

I live about 25 mins south of the fairgrounds and didn't go. Got a new job so money is very tight and would rather put the $15 toward my motor. Do wish I made it though.

Look at teh bright side. Your son found the "flaw" before you did.

Hey Dawg,

If you walked by a 29 whippet hot rod with a 53 mecury flathead under the hood, then you walked by me! Wish the weather had been a tad warmer but all in all was a good show. I bought a 1933 Graham from the car corral. THEN I found out about the blown rearend. Now I know why #1 son was so quick to agreed to drive up from CT with my truck and trailer to pick up my buy! And didn't call his mom about the rearend until he was halfway back to CT! Kids!
