I am preparing for a 700r4 installation behind my 396. I have the drive shaft out, exhaust disconnected. Trans cross member unbolted. As I'm trying to figure out what to unbolt next I started looking at my bell housing. I can only get my hands on two bolts on the drivers side. Do I need to pull the engine forward? or remove my headers to get this turbo350 out??

Newbie,, you will need to tilt motor back as far as you can, remove dist, watch out of accel linkage, prop motor up at oil pan with a good 2x4, You may have to remove existing cooler lines and linkage. You may have to remove starter. Loosen motor mount to tower long bolts. . Watch out for damage to heater core cover and nipples, I am not sure how much room you have there. Once you have disconnected flywheel bolts , then take top trans bolts out and start working with the two on each side of the lower case, Easy out , very slow. Dont let this thing fall on you. What else.? Yes, you may have to remove headers depending on how much room they take up.

Going back with 700r , you will be working with a shift cable that goes into trans case on right side, do not bend it.

After removing the distributor I was able to reach the two top bolts from the top. a ratchet wench works good.

Thanks Don. Bigger job than I thought but you know how that goes. Rooms is very limited. Not sure if the previous owner used the BB motor mounts when doing the upgrade. I have attached a picture.Do I just mark the distributer orientation before I take it out. Looks like it time to break out the Cherry picker?

Don't forget if you remove your dist. you should take the convertor bolts off first and bolt it up last so you don't turn the engine and lose your mark.

Hi,
Might I recommend a 200R4 Transmission. Art Carr has one that handles mega horsepower. What I liked most about it was that it has the same dimensions as a Powerglide or Turbo 350 which means that you will not have to shorten your driveshaft. Also, the Crossmember will not have to be modified or relocated because the transmission mount is in the same location.
Just a thought. I have one in my 68 Camaro and love it.

I did consider the 200r4 but its takes a lot of cash to handle the torque.

You are f-- up if you think that 700 is gonna do you fine if it isn't built up GOOD!!!

I say this b/c darn near all of the ads I read for 700's say 450hp is fine!!

The 200 jobber is better, imho!!

I say this b/c even tho guys say 700's will live behind a 500+ hp engine, a 200 can be built to hold up behind an 800+hp engine!!

And I would buy it from the real ART CARR or else from Bruce!!

And I got a quote several years back from Art b/c I am worried about my M-20 leaving me that's behind my 550hp/496!!

Really cant tell motor mount towers this way, they have a part number stamped on it. If you could get that, it would help. Bet that David Pozzi would look at them and tell. The only way to get them is remove motor mount or motor, that I know of. Maybe one of the other guys will chime in here.
As for the 700R, they will work for a cruiser but when you start beating on them, well , you will find out. 200r is better but do some home work here, you may run a stout th350 and add the gear vendors OD package. Just a thought. Or better still, convert to Tremac.

Guys, I appreciate your input. I know your hearts are in the right place, but telling me that the transmission that I just bought is the wrong doesn't really aid me in the proper removal of the old one.

I've read all of the 700&200 threads an have come to the conclusion that people are passionate for one or the other, but never both. I really like the idea of the 200 for installation reasons but was persuaded away from my close friend and Mechanic. He's been building race cars for 40 years and recommended the 700 as did his\my tranny builder. He drives his nova 1 1/2 hrs each way every week to the tracks and lifts the tires off the ground on every pull. His son on the other hand has been racing strictly Grand Nationals since they have been new and runs 10's

That being said, money is a big issue also. I simply do not have the cash to build a bullet proof 200r4 for over 3g or build a bulletproof 3speed and then add another 3g for the GV. If I had 3g I would have put a 5 speed in it.

Tanny Wars will continue to rage but I need to get my old one out first!
