View Full Version : What have I got?
Acidburn May 10th, 07, 02:00 AM I just received my grandfather's '67 plain jane and I was just curious as to what exactly I've got. If someone could decode these tags for me, it'd be greatly appreciated. And, is there anyway to tell if this is the original engine or not? Thanks.
The car:

VIN:

Body tag (is that what it's called?):
http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/2222/13sq9.jpg
All of the codes I could find on the engine:

drdave69 May 10th, 07, 05:22 AM Going by the VIN it was assembled in Los Angeles and is a straight six.
The trim tag only tells you the original interior and exterior color since it has no options.
709-Z = Gold standard buckets
Y-Y = Butternut Yellow exterior
KevinK7 May 10th, 07, 05:39 AM ...you've got one rust free 40 year old car, that's for sure
...There should be a machined surface on the engine block near the distributor base. Check what numbers are stamped there as well.
Your car was built '02B', ...('02'=2nd month, ...Feb ; 'B'= 2nd week) the 2nd week of Feb '67, ...so the stamped #'s on the engine would fall slightly before if it's the original motor.

I looks like it could be, but like Kevin said, the engine code is stamped next to the distributor. This link should help you:

Your car looks like it is a 3-speed stick on the column? Can you get the trans and axle codes also?
Look here to find out where to look:

Any original paper work on the car?
jet_car2000 May 10th, 07, 06:21 AM Wow thats one sweet lil 67 you got there ! blue ss May 10th, 07, 06:25 AM That car looks very original, You could even have the build sheet under the tank. Make sure you know what a build sheet looks like before you start changing interior or droping the tank! I was so excited when I got my car I repaired the fuel gage the day I got the car later to find out I threw out a perfect condition build sheet that fell when removing my tank. I found this site about the same time I bought the car and was not familiar what it looked like. When I saw a picture of one on this site mths later I almost died. ya Im an Idiot DONT DO THE SAME! I have had a hard time sleeping ever since, I think about it every day, I cant help it. Its the only first gen I will every own and its NOT replaceable. Beleive me I have tried. And Im still trying just to know the history. Im such an idiot!
wiskeesour May 10th, 07, 08:48 AM Everything on that motor tells me its original to the car. Very nice BTW!
foreverlookin May 10th, 07, 02:23 PM Very nice original car.

Thanks for the links. I'll look for all these codes this weekend.
I do have bundle of papers about the car that I need to go through. We'll see what they tell me.

Is there a chance the original POP is in those ???
The 3877178 casting is a 1962~78 230 or 250 casting.
The casting date just to the left (out of picture) ends in '7', which is 1967, the rest of the numbers are the full date.
Head looks original also.
The cowl tag is one of just a few I've seen with no body options what so ever.
Stuff like the AM radio would not be noted on the cowl, but would be on your build sheet if it's still there.

What's a POP?
Vintage 68 May 10th, 07, 03:13 PM What's a POP?
Tom:
The POP is the 'Protecto Plate' information card that was furnished in the original owners manual for warranty purposes. It is about the size of a credit card and it normally made of metal.
It is normally found in the original owners warranty booklet.
Here is alink to the Camaro Research Groups site with info - http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml#POPCodes
They are sometimes discarded after the warranty expires, the car is sold or ???
I found one of them for a car in a brown folder with other reciepts for some exhaust work ... So look through everything to see if it is there.
Hope this helps;
John
Acidburn May 10th, 07, 05:28 PM Well, I went through the bundle. It contained a whole ton of insurance and registration cards and receipts for work done. It looks like the car has had a couple fenders replaced, a new cylinder head, and tons of other miscellaneous maintenance.
There were a couple gems however:

http://img523.imageshack.us/img523/2386/63920195lj0.jpg

http://img523.imageshack.us/img523/8426/64848176xa8.jpg
From decoding the POP, I found that it came with a 250 I6, Saginaw 3-speed, 10 bolt rear, and an AM radio.
Everett#2390 May 10th, 07, 06:39 PM Marvelous, absolutely marvelous! Father's Day is coming in June.
KevinK7 May 10th, 07, 07:10 PM ...story keeps getting better, ...the POP :)
Lawrence Shaw May 10th, 07, 08:07 PM Awesome car, awesome documents. Very cool that it was your grandfathers and now you can enjoy it. You will see on this site most guys really appreciate an molested original car 6 cylinder or 8.:hurray:
oregonjoe May 10th, 07, 08:07 PM Acidburn(great name, must be some story to it?),
Very cool to find original documents and apparently original car.
Grampa's ride on top of it all !!!!!!! Plain Jane aside, it has a lot going for it.
What type of throttle linkage does it have at the carb? Cable or solid?
If not too much trouble could you post a pic of the set up?
Joe

It's not that interesting of a story. It's just from what was my favorite movie in 7th grade; I've just used it for everything since.
I think you can see the throttle linkage in this picture:

oregonjoe May 10th, 07, 10:32 PM Thanks for the prompt reply. excellent picture. That is how I recall the original
but long gone linkage on my 67 inline. All I find in the resto sources is cable set ups.
thanks again for the pic. Good luck with your 67.

Well did you drop the tank? Just wondering. Is it there?
Acidburn May 14th, 07, 03:01 PM Well did you drop the tank? Just wondering. Is it there?
Nope, I didn't drop the tank.
Acidburn Jul 10th, 07, 11:22 PM OK, I finally got the chance to get under it and try to clean things off some.
The number on the side of the engine is 3877178. The numbers on the bell housing are 3858403 and 317. And on the transmission, they are 3858886 and either 317 or 817. There are more numbers on the trans, but I can't see them until I drop it.
Old Man Jul 11th, 07, 07:35 AM Doesn't get any better than that Acidburn. It's great that you got a straight 67 with all the goodies and a family car at that, congrats.
