ok so I'm an idiot. I'm looking at the trunk lid weatherstrip and can't figure which way it's supposed to go in. if you look at it straight down, one part has two grooves and three high spots. the other end has one lip sticking out. which part goes where? here are some pix so what goes in the trunk groove and what does not? thanks in advance.

Burt reading Jim's link I understand a lot of guys have troubles with the trunk lids needing to be slammed closed after installing the new weatherstriping. Mine doesn't even come close to closing and it is installed correctly. I'm thinking of going with the hollow core seal, I've read that it is much more forgiving and you won't have any issues like the others posted. There are a lot of generic trunk weatherstriping out there and some are significantly incorrect and overly large in size. John Z's pic looks like what I need. Perhaps NOS is the only way to go. I know OER has a lot of issues with some of their other GM authorized repro stuff, maybe the weatherstriping is another example of something that GM should not have authorized if the trunk lids close that hard. I know the 68 RS belt molding made by OER is literally garbage compared to the NOS stuff and GM approved it.
I'd be interested to know what brand everyone is using for their trunk weatherstrip, but only if their trunk closes easily and seals well.

Dave, its not what you're looking for but for the record I have the OER trunk seal and its really hard to shut my trunk lid. I also would like to know what works better . Does Metro make a trunk seal ?

I had originally bought SoftSeal for the trunk on my '69; but have since replaced it with the same piece from Steele. I bought it straight from their website.
With the Softseal, I had to slam the trunk so hard I thought that I'd break spoiler. When I put the weatherstrip piece from Steele in, I could shut the deck lid with three fingers.
By the way, the Fisher body manual has a really good close up of the correct orientation for the the trunk weatherstrip.

Bert - starting at the latch, above the tail lights - the wave of the rubber breaks toward you. As you seat the square base into the gutter or groove you will be able to feel when it is installed properly. The top ridge gets tucked under the lip. You can stretch it just a bit to make a section drop into place easier. Dry fit a foot or so before using any 3m goop and you'll get the hang of it.
I just replaced what I believe was OEM hollow core because it was installed all bunched up and wrinkly. It had a shiny outer finish and the wave was much larger than the Metro I just used to replace it. The Metro looks much nicer and shuts better although the old didn't close bad.

Yep, with you all's help I know which way to orientate it. It just looked a little odd at first. We'll see how the trunk closes after I get it in. thanks..
