View Full Version : S & W Rollbar Fit/Quality
tumper May 13th, 07, 03:48 PM I am in the need of a rollbar but only for regidity and further safety. This is for a 68 Camaro, full interior and will not be raced at the dragstrip. I built the car as a pro touring ride with good handling. I am pretty sure that I will be buying an S & W kit, unless someone suggests a better fitting kit for the same amount of money. My question is.......does this kit fit well with a back seat or will I have to do something different with the rear bars? When do I install the headliner and rear seats? Before I install the bar or After? The car interior is out as I am beginning to reassemble everything so I would rather know now than wish I had or hadn't installed things before doing this. Thanks for any help from ya'll that have done this.
Drag Fabricator May 13th, 07, 05:53 PM Mine is an S&W bend, but since then i've done quite a few cages and have gotten them much closer to everything then S&W's.
for a kit they are pretty good though.
Everett#2390 May 13th, 07, 05:58 PM If you have Custom interior, the side bars will need to be bent inward as the Custom molded armrest is too thick compared to standard interior door panels.
tumper May 13th, 07, 07:06 PM I don't have the custom interior just the factory standard. I have heard a lot of good complements on S&W's stuff but have no experience with them. How does the stuff from CE stand compared to S&W? My main concern is how close the rear bars come to the rear seat back and to the headliner, both still have to be put in and I am stupped as to what to install first. I do want the bar to fit good and not look like it should fit another car though.

I don't know what kind of power plant you have, but do you need a rollbar for a PT car...you will totally lose the ability to put passengers in the backseat for safety reasons. Good weld-in subframe connectors, good seats and 3-pt belts do alot for rigidity and safety. JMO...
tumper May 13th, 07, 07:45 PM It is a 574hp 385 and I realize that I will lose the rear seat seating but that is fine. I already have DSE subframe connectors in. One of the reasons for adding the rollbar is so I can install better seatbelts instead of the factory lap belt, but I do not want the aftermarket or factory 3-point stuff. I would rather have the aftermarket cam lock seatbelts but am not sure of how I would secure the upper body belts to the car!!
Everett#2390 May 14th, 07, 05:00 AM you will totally lose the ability to put passengers in the backseat. Not particularly. I have a S&W 8-pt bar and the rear bars make straight shot through the rear deck leaving room for back seat install.
I have no back seat, but, at time of install, I told the welder my plans of what I would like to have and so I can install the rear seat.
But, with the main hoop, side bars, and horizontal bar for belt hook-up, only kids below the age of 10 could climb into the back seat.
tumper May 14th, 07, 06:30 AM That's the thing, my daughter is 14 and I wouldn't allow anyone in the back seat if there were a roll bar. That isn't a problem, the car is built for 2 people period so........
DragRacer May 14th, 07, 08:36 PM I've done a few S&W's and CE's as well as some others. As far as kits go, S&W is the nicest of the ones I've done.
Probably going to cut mine out this summer when racing in 110 deg. heat is miserable and custom bend a new one.
tumper May 16th, 07, 01:59 PM Thanks for the replys, I went ahead and ordered an S&W 8pt kit today even though I will not be using the side bars that come with it. Is there enough room to install the headliner after installing the bars or should I do it first? Also this kit has the bars that go from the main loop down to the rear floor boards at a 45 degree angle, should I attach these to the dse frame connectors or not run them at all?
Mwilson May 16th, 07, 07:26 PM My S&W cage fit absolutely perfect, every notch, bend & length was dead on. I bought the full cage and installed only the 8 pt for now I did it with the headliner in and used a sheet of 24ga steeel 24"x24" to guard the headliner when we welded up there, why not do the full 8pt now and be legal?
tumper May 17th, 07, 08:30 AM I am going to do the full 8pt but I am going to install the side bars after I install the interior, the car is going back together now but I need all the room I can get to put the wiring harnesses and seats etc in.
Everett#2390 May 17th, 07, 09:13 AM What's a matter, you don't want to be a contortionist and knock your head several times?
tumper May 18th, 07, 07:33 AM NO!!! LOL, not really. The safety factor that it will already improve on will make me feel safer incase I am in a wreck, moreso if my wife is with me. Now the problem becomes the seats to run with the harnesses. Thinking of running the Procar that so many are using. I wanted to use the 4th gen seats but other than cutting a hole in the headrest for the belts I can't, and then you have no support for them in an accedent and I would be worse off. So plans have to change with updates I guess.
