View Full Version : Big Block Engine Advice Please!!!
Lol_uk May 14th, 07, 04:53 AM I have the chance to get a complete BB setup to drop in to my 68 coupe- ex drag race engine.Any advice or comments on this setup would be much appreciated!
My concern is that it doesn't seem as quick at the strip as I would have expected:
I've been told: 3200 pounds (CHEVELLE),
has run 7.35/94.88 1/8 mile
11.55/129.01 ¼ mile
Here's the spec I've been quoted:
489 cu in Stroker BBC
Barry Grant 850 double pumper
Barry Grant fuel log with pressure gage
Edelbrock Air Gap manifold
Moroso, K+N 14x6 air cleaner
Moroso tall valve covers
Large Oval port heads, big 225/1.88 balves, pocket ported and polished CC’d. Harland Sharp roller rockers. 3/8 chromemolly push rods.
Competition cams K kit 230/23 Duration 520/520 lift
Valve springs, steel retainers, valve locks, hi tech roller timing, gears and chain, Edelbrock die cast aluminum timing cover.
454 30 over ¼ stroker forged steel crankshaft, cross drilled, chamfered oil holes, radius on rod/main journals micro polished.
Steel forged I beam rods, APR bolts bushed floating pins. Keith Black premium pistons, 10.2 comp. Ratio. Pump gas, total seal piston rings, fluiddamper, harmonic damper, 8” OD internally balanced.
Does this sound like agood street/strip engine (I'm running power brakes/ TH400/3.55 rear)
Thanks
Lol
pdq67 May 14th, 07, 05:52 AM Excellent street engine, but I figure I would use onna UDHarold's bigger solid lifter cams to better use the big engine! Something more like a 240+/- cam here and good lift.. Nothing down-right wild by no stretch to me..
Lunati's sell's his cams nowadays as does Bullet Cams if I remember right.

Lol_uk May 14th, 07, 06:02 AM Thanks PDQ- it is mostly a street motor I want...with vacuum for the brakes, but loads of grunt!
1/4 mile times seem a little conservative...- any guesses on what sort of dyno figures might be realistic ?...( I'm thinking 450-500 HP at the most)...
thanx
Lol_uk May 14th, 07, 02:14 PM Any other advice or comments on this combo gratefully received...I need to make a decision whether to buy this pretty soon!
Thanx
greg moreira May 14th, 07, 03:45 PM On the contrary......that thing is absolutely FLYIN for such a mild combo. The ET isnt super impressive, but 129 miles per hour is....well....FLYING for that combo. I have to wonder if the guy is B.S.'ing you, sayin it goes basically 130 MPH on a very basic combo(which would be fast enough to go WAAY into the 10's in a car hooking up right). If it does run that mph, its spinning like mad and has the potential to go way faster.
Another thing that concerns me a bit is the 1/8 MPH VS 1/4MPH. Its only showing 94 MPH at the 1/8, but 129 on the 1/4? Thats out of line to see almost 36 more MPH on the second half of the track, especially with an engine thats so mild that it should not have that kind of top end charge. Maybe the lighter weight of the car is really just making waay more of a difference than Id expect, but Id still have to see it to beleive it.
To answer your question, yes if the combo is built like he said, than its a good street strip deal. An oval port engine with a hydraulic cam of only 230 at .050 in that many cubes will be plenty mild for cruisin around. I still have a hard time beleiving anywhere near 130 mph though. In a light car such as that, I could beleive that motor being in the mid 11's, but at about 15 mph slower though. And the car would still have to be light to go that fast!
pdq67 May 14th, 07, 05:29 PM Anyway, per D2k, my about 9.8 to 1 Cr., 496 w/ just a good old cc 282S solid cam in it say's it's right at 550 hp at 5500 rpm and 580 t at 4500 rpm!!
I just call her my great big "tow-truck" motor!! He, He!!
I built her for max midrange grunt and NOTHING fancy at all..
I do figure w/ the cam UDHarold designed for me after I bugged him for a long time that is a solid lifter cam version of CC's good old 288AR solid street roller cam that I figure there is at least another 75 to 100 hp in her..
I flat won't run a solid roller cam on the street sorta deal is all here!!!

PS., and btw, running my power curve through DRAG with a weight of 3400 pounds, my M-20, 3.31's and good tires aggressively driven, it come's up with a 10.5 second quarter at 130 mph if it hooks and doesn't break anything!!
I will be tickled to death w/ a low 11.+!!! Funny, my top speed is only going to like like 133 mph, so it's not going to be ALL that fast, but I figure it will be QUICK!!!!
BB's are powerful SOB's!!!!!!!!
69 Rat May 14th, 07, 06:03 PM Cam seems super mild in comparison to the rest of the combo.
67RS502 May 15th, 07, 07:20 AM I'm thinkin the mph is a miss print... 94 in the 1/8 would be around 119mph in the 1/4 (not 129) unless I missed something and its got a 150shot on the big end.
Lol_uk May 15th, 07, 11:50 PM I think the 1/4 mile figure is a miss print...I need to check with the guy but he had said previously that the car was a 10 second car...
So this is probably a pretty good combo?...I need to get on it then!
Thanks for all the advice/comments
pdq67 May 16th, 07, 06:05 PM Running the numbers, 10.5 is 130 mph!

greg moreira May 16th, 07, 11:22 PM I still dont buy it. Dont get me wrong, this is an excellent combo if its built as said for a 3.55 geared street car like yours. Itll pull like a freight train, drive well, and with proper suspension, it can go 11's in a light vehicle such as a camaro. Its not a bad buildup by any means for a fast street car.....but we are all doin something wrong if such a mild setup goes 10's or anywhere near 130 for that matter.
It would have to be super duper light, otherwise, the average street car will have a hard time going any faster than mid 11's at around 116 Id say with a build like that. Maybe 120 at low low 3000lbs, but 130 is a real far stretch for me on a mildish build like that.
Lol_uk May 18th, 07, 09:31 AM I'm afraid it's all academic as the guy sold the whole car before I could nail the deal!...real shame as it was a great deal!!!
So now it looks like I'll need extra dollars and a trip to TandL engines- they look like they build stout big blocks for resonable money.
Thanks for all your advice on this- this forum is soo damn good!
pdq67 May 18th, 07, 08:24 PM Guys,
That said I would be tickled to death w/ an 11.+ b/c I know they are just sim. programs, but to me it is the trends that help me out here is all.
pdq67
3pedals May 21st, 07, 08:51 AM pdq, just take your car to the track and find out!!! no need to torture your self with those simulation programs, haha.
pdq67 May 21st, 07, 05:15 PM Right!!
ONE pass is all I will get at each track!!
NO safety stuff at all!!
