The Olds 12 bolt, or O axle, is actually a 10 bolt inside with an 8.5 ring gear. There are parts available for it, but they are more expensive than Chevy 12 bolt parts. Judobear May 14th, 07, 06:16 PM Thank you! Doesn't sound like it is worth pursuing. john big gear head May 14th, 07, 07:23 PM Check it out and see if it is a Chevy 12 bolt. Someone could have put one in the Olds. The Chevy 12 bolt will have a large, deep upside down V stamped into the cover that runs from side to side. Eleanor's Nemesis May 14th, 07, 08:52 PM I had always heard the B-O-P rears were better than the chevrolet 12 bolts......Non tapered axles in the BOP's? I hope there is some differences in the Olds rears, I just bought a 12 bolt olds out of a 68 Gutless. A friend of mine looked at the inards of it and said it had some big axles in it.......maybe he was looking at something else, lol. big gear head May 15th, 07, 05:56 PM It's been a while sence I was in an Olds rear end, but I think it has 29 spline axles. I know that they are not 30 spline like the Chevy 12 bolt. The ring ear is also 8 1/2 inches, 3/8 smaller than the Chevy 12 bolt. bighaas79 May 16th, 07, 11:36 AM Actually i did some digging on these as i too ended up with one. As i understand it the ring gear is actually like 8.625". And from what I was told the only compnay to make aftermarket gears for it is presicion gear... At a cost of like around $400 if memory serves, and they DO NOT fit the stock carrier they are made for an aftermarket carrier at around $700? Can't remember off hand, But for advantages they do have the bigger ring gear and they do not have c clips they are a bolt in axle. |
