i need some help. i replaced my front wiring harness on my 67 camaro and when i went to plug it in i didnt notice the plastic tabs sticking out of the firewall that hold the plug to the firewall and snapped off the bottom tab. :( does anyone have any fixes.... i am afraid the harness will wiggle loose on the bottom side and my head lights wont work.

It should all be held down by a big screw, wouldn't expect it to go anywhere.

67 uses two plastic clips - one on the top and one on the bottom.

Did you break the part on the harness or the one that goes into the back of the fusebox?

Don't feel bad, I broke the one on the harness when I did my install and had to send it back to American Autowire. They fixed it for me for not a lot of $$. You don't want to drive w/out having the harness clicked in b/c it will wiggle free. I had this issue w/my engine harness before I fixed it.

Where did you buy your harness?

yes it has the 2 clips that are standard on 67's. i broke off the bottom clip. on the plug part it has a pocket to receive the clip. i bought the hide away headlight package from rick's. go it all installed and was working my way back and the last thing is what i had the problem with. do i have to remove the fuse panel? i mean is it part of the fuse panel? this is the first time i have posted any questions and i love this. i am not that experienced in car restoration and i know there is a lot of you people out there who has dealt with issues so look for more of my problems. anyways i just want to to fit securly into the female part on firewall. i was thinking of melting the broken clip with a lighter and then hold it there against were it broke off and hope it adhears to the surface...... help!
thanks to you all for your postings.

I don't know if this will help but i've seen connections inside of computers held together with hot melt glue guns

No screws on 67's? hmmm, ok.

And the clip that broke was on the firewall connector, not on the new harness?

That's nasty.

3 choices.

Replace the dash harness. (An expensive, time consuming Job I wouldn't wish on anyone, particulary for no other reason than to fix a broken peice of plastic.

Fix it somehow. Find a way to epoxy that thingy back on there. No idea if it would hold up, probably not.

"Engineer" another way to hold it on. What pops into my head is a screw that can be screwed into the firewall (without going too far and shorting out the fuseblock!) with a washer on it that will catch the edge of the connector (something will need to be arranged to hold the washer square or it will slip off) and hold it in place. Perhaps a small but long self tapping machine head sheetmetal screw, slip on a washer, run a nut on to hold the washer, dril a pilot hole in the firewall, and screw it tight?

I use ty-raps on broken connectors all the time.
I don't know if it will work in your case, but they are available in many sizes so it's worth a try.
Did you save your old harness? The old wires will come out and maybe you can reuse the connector, or get another one from Factory Fit/American Autowire.
I don't think the "melting it together with a lighter" will work. Even if you where able to get the plastic to fuse, it would end up too short.

It is too difficult to get down there w/a lighter. I know b/c I broke the other end, meaning the one on my engine harness (the female connector), not the male connector that comes out of the back of the fusepanel.

I also replaced my dash harness when I did my other harnesses. Let me take a look tonight and see if there is a way to remove the part from the dash harness that you need b/c I may have an old one kicking around.

I looked at all the alterntives when mine broke and couldn't figure a way to repair it b/c there wasn't anything to wire tie it to and the thought of using a screw that close to wiring gives me thoughts of smoke and melted Camaros which isn't good.

I'll let you know tonight what I have.

Correct me if I'm wrong , when I replaced my wiring in my 68 with the American Autowire update series it said you had to modify the bulkhead connector area on a 67 to make it fit . I don't think they make a stock 67 style update kit , they use the 68 style bulkhead connector for 67 and 68 .

well my new front wiring harness should have plugged into the female part on my firewall. with no problems. but i forced the issue and snapped off the bottom plastic clip that holds the plug of the front wiring harness

I took a look at my old wiring harness. It had two broken clips so it is not going to be any good to you but I wanted to let you know that although the fuse panel looks like one piece, it is actually two pieces. There is one part that the fuses connet into and then wires run into the piece that goes thru the firewall and clips the light and engine harness to the fuse panel.

You could replace just the piece with the connections. It would be a bit of a pain b/c you'll have to pul out each of the pin connectors that go into it and reinstall them in the new part.

I would guess that you probably got a Factory Fit/American Autowire harness. You may want to call them and tell them what happened. They may offer to fix your dash harness for a fair price or sell you the piece. I have always had awesome luck dealing w/them and have probably replaced 20 harnesses over the past several years. Their site is www.factoryfit.com

The only issue is if you need to remove your dash harness and send it to them, it is a decent project. If you end up replacing the part in your car, you'll be pretty sore by the time you're done.

Let me know if you need any pics of what I'm describing here.
