View Full Version : DSE firewall plate
Rich-Allen May 17th, 07, 06:44 AM Before transplanting my LS2 I want to install a smooth firewall plate. I plan on having AC and was hoping for the new Gen IV from Vintage air.
Anyone have pictures of this setup?
Rich

Not a Gen IV unit inside the car, but here is the firewall area we did on a car we are about o assemble with a DSE fill plate and Vintage Air unit. The car is getting an LS2/4L60e combo.

BA. May 18th, 07, 06:20 PM Rich, I'm proabably about the same place you are in that plan.
I have the Gen IV unit purchased and the DSE plate installed but that's it.
What pics were ya looking for? Hole positioning?
Buck May 19th, 07, 06:39 AM By the time your ready to install the Vintage air, there will be something new out you want.
I'll than get your current unit cheap... see how this game is played? :D

Alan, yea I was looking to see how others ran the vintage with that firewall plate.
One more thing, you better get that alignment checked before you drive it.
LOL
bigtyme May 19th, 07, 08:19 PM Rich, I sent you an email with pick, I'm not sure how to post them. Take a look at my car. here is where you can get the fire wall sheet metal.

I am getting ready to install the same firewall. I purchased one with a raised step in to simulate the factory seam.
BA. May 20th, 07, 06:53 PM Rich, I know you've been around the block more than a few times but did you mean a pic like one of these? (technically, these are probably a Gen 2 or 3 Vintage Air. The Gen IV just came out a few weeks ago.
Vintage Air says the Gen IV mounts using the same holes as the stock mess we had under the dash.
The location of those holes may be slightly different for a Gen IV. That's a pic that I don't have and haven't seen yet. One we'd both love to see!
Maybe in a few more weeks/months.
Blade May 26th, 07, 06:41 AM that is a sweet look set up what are the prices
bigtyme May 27th, 07, 05:52 AM I cant remember the prices, but the fit great. Call mike
Rich-Allen Aug 7th, 07, 01:45 PM I have the DSE plate in a box and I think it looks to small.
Just ordered one from Mikes. It looks to be twice as nice and covers more area.

Did you get the one with the raised step? I just installed mine and the passenger side plate covers the entire firewall left of the wiper motor if you are looking in the engine bay. It really cleans up the firewall, but man is it a lot of welding and grinding.
130fe Aug 7th, 07, 04:18 PM I am about 80% done with the Gen 4 install in my 68. Here is a link to some of the install pictures. The only picture I forgot to take was how the factory controller is integrated into the new system. Overall it hasn't been too tough, just time consuming. I like to take on alot at one time (glutten for punishment), I am doing the VA system, a street and performance pulley system and converting to a covans dash unit all at the same time. Let me know if anyone has any questions.

That's exactly what I want.
If your going to go through the trouble of welding in a smooth firewall plate, you might as well completely cover it. I have a DSE slecta speed wiper kit. should look great on that new firewall.

Hi Chris, yea I'm going to do a new AC system but I went with Classic auto air. This car is giving me headaches, I started with what I thought was a solid car and after starting to covert it over to a pro-touring style I found many hidden problems.
I'm out of town right now but when I get home, the motor needs to get mocked up.

No problem, I have installed one other VA unit before (original surefit) and I will say that the second time around was much easier. The newer style defroster ducts were much easier than the old style ones. The Gen 4 comes with seperate "prebent" hard lines that attach to the evaporator and route them to the original firewall plate area. I think you could make your own line and still use the firewall bulhead units and be able to get around this. If anyone of you guys need me to take any measurements (for gen 4 stuff), just let me know.

How much did that cost? did u have to cut out the hole for the windshield wipers?
bigtyme Oct 5th, 07, 05:51 PM How much did that cost? did u have to cut out the hole for the windshield wipers?
I think it was around $120.00 from Mike's Custom. Everything is lazer CNC cut. even the holes for the wipers and bolt holes for the fenders. It's worth every dime.
Blade Oct 5th, 07, 07:19 PM wonder if u can get options with them. like I dont need the windshield wiper motor hole.
bigtyme Oct 5th, 07, 08:13 PM yes, you can get the 3 ways. check out his sight

Rich-Allen Oct 6th, 07, 06:26 AM My company just bought a CNC plasma with water table.
I'm considering making these firewall plates and selling them.
While I don't need the money, fellow gear heads do have the need for them. DSE's plate is way to small, I prefer a plate like Mike's sells but his company is not setup for Internet transactions. You send them a check and then they send the plate. :(

Blade Oct 6th, 07, 12:27 PM thanks for the info.
