I believe that factory consoles were not painted but just the black plastic. If your console lid and ashtray match the rest of the console, I'd leave it alone. If you want more shine, use Armor-all or furniture polish to get some luster. Painting it, your setting yourself for other issues. Paint not sticking or pealing, scratching, etc. I had to dye all of the pieces black because I replaced the console lid and it did not match the rest of the console.

I have several original GM 68/69 consoles (some were damaged/parts donors) and all of them came molded in a blonde-colored plastic with the color sprayed on - black, blue, whatever. The repops are molded in black plastic. My opinion is that even the black plastic ones should get a coat of semi-gloss black paint to look correct.

Hmmm, my original is black through-out.

I would dye the console. The dye worked perfectly on my Camaro and I am very happy with the finish.
