In another post, someone mentioned rubbing clay on thier car to clean it or something. Does that work? Does it make a huge mess?

No mess...and it works great. I recommend the Mothers Gold Clay Bar kit....

It's not just any clay, though. My dad uses the Mothers clay bar on his 64 Vette and it does a great job removing the grit from the surface.

I can just imagine someone running out and rubbing Play-doh on their car. Hmmm, I wonder if that would work?

I used to sell this stuff (NAPA auto parts #7260) and would demo it all the time. People threw me all kinds of stuff to "stump" me.

It never failed once! I removed water spots off glass, vicious water spots (that you could feel) off a black bc/cc, years old urethane primer overspray off a bb/cc, and how about DIRECT overspray off a plexyglass window with NO damage to the window what so ever!
The first brand was called "CLay Magic" and it really is MAGIC.

I still wonder who was the first person that decided to rub a hunk of clay on their car!?! But it works amazingly well! I clayed my car and it pulled all sorts of gunk out of my paint. I've also used it for getting sticker gunk off bumpers with great success. Just be sure to keep the clay bar wet. And it does leave a thin residue that you have to wash off afterwards.

You mention keeping the bar wet. With what? Water? I went to buy a clay bar a while back & the counterman said I "HAD" to have the wetting agent for it to work. It was more expensive than the clay. Just curious, do I need the wetter?

Rick, the "lube" is sort of a window cleaner substance. It smells just like it. It isn't that expensive NAPA has it under the Martin Senour label part number 7263 I think or 7261or7262. I can't find my old prices sheets and I forget. The lube is only about 6 Dollars for 16 oz. http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

I found my info, get it at NAPA under these numbers...

#7260 Correction clay kit (100gram fine bar 8oz lube)$16.49
#7261 200 gram "fine" bar. $23.99
#7262 200 gram "medium" bar. $24.99
#7263 16 oz Lube. $6.99

I don't know what the difference is between fine and medium being they have no grit. They work by Sticking to the contaminant on any slick surface. It'll work on chrome, glass, paint, counter tops, kichen table. ect......

I just used the claybar from Zaino (polish mentioned in the other topic: www.zainobros.com), (http://www.zainobros.com),) it's about 17 bucks for 2 bars (1 is plenty for a Camaro, so you'll have an extra). I just kept a bucket of water and car wash detergent handy and a sponge. I'd slop some water on an area with the sponge and then rub the clay bar over it. As the clay starts to pick up gunk it gets dirty (rub it along the bottom of your rocker panels and it gets dirty REAL quick I found out!!), so you have to keep kneading the bar so the outside of it is clean. Also, DON'T drop it on the ground!! Little pebbles will stick in the clay and you will scratch them all over your paint!

I've only used the Zaino bar, but I've read that all clay bars are not created equal. I think Zaino, Clay Magic, and Mothers make the best bars. I've heard that Meguiar's bar is crap.

Probably gonna clay and polish my new Impala SS this weekend, so long as it doesn't rain!

Is'nt the clay just a hunk of modeling clay? It sure is cheaper than what Mothers wants for spare clay bars. I picked up a kit from Mothers but have not used it yet. From what you all are saying, I guess I'd better.

Sounds like a good idea, My paint really needs a good cleaning. However, when I lived in Florida..I got a few spots of pine tree sap on the hood. I got most of it off...but there is still some small cracked, crusty looking circles where the sap was. Tried polishing compound and bur&tar remover - no luck. Are there any mild chemicals that would remove this? I'm trying to stay away from sanding as long as I can.

These clays are very sticky, that is how they work, they stick to the contaminant and pull it off the surface. If you want to try using modeling clay to save 20 bucks on your $10,000 or $20,000 car...........I guess it's up to you. http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif
