Hey everyone new to the forum, did a little bit of searching around, hope you guy can give me a little advice, im still new and learning everyday

i picked up a 72 with a crate 350, mild cam, accel hei dist., i started to check the timing: unhooked and pluged the vac line, checked the timing at idle... 10*. Then had a friend run up the engine and the mechanical advance quickly went up 6* then stoped, so im only getting 16* with the vac plugged. The cap was bad so i replaced the cap and rotor with new msd parts, cleaned the weights, tried squirting some electrical cleaner under there, and got an advance curve kit and tried every concivable combination of springs... still only 6 deg of mechanical advance.

okay so tonight i took the dist out out, looks like it might be replacement time, the weight circled in red kinda freely flops there, it doesn't snap back into place, the disk circled in red is broken in half, and there is a general overall rust-ish look to it, plus im not shure how freely the center should spin but it kinda sticks at points when it is lightly rotated.

im assuming it is replacement time, and i have the day off and would like to have the car running again soon, so which one to get now, i know i can get a re-man for about $80, i like the price of the MSD HEI distrib ($149.99) and heard mixed reviews (plus not as thrilled about the price) on the MSD E-curve. concidering that im running the MSD digital 6al, nitrous, and hopefully soon will be either building up my 350 or doing a 383, which distrib should i go with, i'd like to keep it about $150, but also want performance and dont want something im gonna have to replace soon, sorry for being long winded but i didn't want to leave anything out

thanks everyone

You have quite a few choices.

Most importantly, while you're fixing all this up, do you have a timing retard set into your MSD6 triggered by the same thing that powers the NOS solenoinds? It can be set up to do this, and it's important that you pull 2 degrees of total timing for each 50HP worth of gas, if you don't, things will melt.

I like msd products, and would go that way for sure. I've had both MSD and Accel ignition, the MSD's work better.

You still have a lot of choices. A Ready To Run distributor that is able to function standalone would be my choice, then if the box ever fails you can still make noise.

MSD's "Ready To Run" hei would be a dropin. Thier #8360 distributor is also a nice peice, can work with or without the box, and will work with your existing spark plug wires. It does require a separate coil tho.

You may have a mech advance stop bushing installed on it. This allows you to have more initial advance and limit the amount of mech advance. In the pic below its the round sleeve on the post sticking thru the hole under the upper plate assy.

yes i do have the dig6 box set up with the n2o selinoid to pull out the timing, i still have not yet hit the nitrous as i still want to conect the frame up yet. I am thinking about going the msd route

***edit***

I have the MSD 8360 Billet Ready To Run DIstributor with a Blaster 3 Coil in my 68 Camaro's 327. It works so well , I put the same setup in my 66 Chevelle's 396.
