This may sound a little stupid but I was wondering if it was standard practice to remove these pieces when doing a new color paint-job.

I removed them but holy sticky crap, there is goo everywhere!!
These pieces seem to hold the weather stripping also, but I couldn't understand why someone would put sticky goo between these channels and the car. They screw into place. Maybe rain at freeway speeds would seep past them without the goo? I dunno.

So anyway, is it common practice to remove these for painting the body?

Thx!

the more stuff you can take off, the better your paint job will be.

I took mine off and put them back after paint. It looks good and clean that way. The guy who owned the car before me just taped them off and painted up to them--but you could sure tell. Looked terrible. Your next question will be "what is that sticky stuff". It's meant as a seal i'm sure, mine stayed intact so i didn't have to worry about it on the re-install. It's been discussed in this forum before.
