: High pitch sound - new ZZ4 engine

I am a beginner in need of some help. I just put a new ZZ4 engine in my 67 camaro and am having some problems with a high pitch sound. It only happens after it has been running for about 10-15 minutes. I drove it down the road about 2 miles, let it idle for a bit and then drove another mile or so and it started to "scream". The temperature never got over 200 this whole time. Could I have a vacuum leak somewhere, or does it sound like something else? Thanks in advance for your help guys!

adaptor needed for holley square bore carb - to - spread bore manifold supplied on the ZZ4.

Thanks Joe - where can I get one of those? I see some adapter kits in the Jegs catalog, but I'm not sure which one is the right one. I assume you got one for your ZZ4 - can you tell me where you got it?

The zz4 comes with square bore intake not spread bore.

Do you have the PVC valve in? Do you have the filter for the other PVC location in the other valve cover? Did you leave the little red plug in? The motor could be trying to breath and is blowing air out somewhere creating that whistle sound. Is your dipstick pushed out?

Did you use sealant on the power brake booster vacuum fitting or plug if manual brakes behind the carb.

I have 2 PVC valves in right now - one on each valve cover. I'm not sure what the little red plug is - can you explain what that is? The dipstick looked like it was ok (not pushed out).

If you have two PVC valves in it then the red plug has been removed. The plug comes from the factory to keep the hole closed. I would use only one PVC. Use a filter in the other hole.

Check around the carb and see if you have the hoses buttom up properly.

Belt or pully noise? Water pump bearing? Clutch fan making noise? Water pressure building up and thermostat stuck? Power steering pump noise?

Just other thoughts for a "screaming noise". Then again a screaming noise could be the wife complaining about money spent on the Camaro and not her. Eliminate this possiblity first and then move on with trouble shooting.

Local auto parts store ............very common part: Sqare bare carb to spread bore manifold.

I think it was made by Mr gasket.

Chris, can i ask what you are using for a upper radiator hose in the ZZ4 ? I just installed a zz4 in my 69 convert and ran into problems getting the radiator hose to fit around the alternator on that motor which sits high on the drivers side of the engine ( almost right in front of the inlet for the radiator). Are you using the stock radiator ? I have been talking to some people who have a hard time keeping these cool .I am thinking about switching to a 4 core manual radiator to keep her cool.

Good luck !

ZZ4 comes with a spreadbore intake.

Aluminum will keep it quite cool. In fact, if there's any air flow thru the radiator, my zz4 will run at the thermostat temp of 180*. in traffic, the electric fan comes on at 210* and drops it right back to 180*.

Actually the intake has a dual pattern mounting pad that will mount both standard-flange Holley and spreadbore Quadrajet carbs.

The holley gasket will barely cover the large rear/sides of the intake and is very prone to vacuume leaks if not properly adapted to the spreadbore.

I've had pretty good luck with the Edelbrock 9265 heat spacer. I think that was the number. You can see it here in this pic under the carb.

I had the same problem - right now (until I figure out something better), I am using a piece of corrugated plastic to shield the upper radiator hose when it comes in contact with the alternator. Anybody have a good suggestion on that hose?

I bought a Be Cool aluminum radiator because I was told that they do a great job keeping the engine cool and am using an electric fan (also Be Cool) due to space issues with the long water pump on the ZZ4.

Try a swivel thermostat housing and get an idea of a hose shape that will clear the alternator. THen hit the local auto store. they will usually allow you to go thru all the hanging hoses. Choose the one that will work for you. The swivel housing opens up your options in hose selection.

i got a zz4 engine also. had the same noise. on each valve cover they got a red plug in there. either side put your pcv valve. other side you need to remove plug and put in a breather.as it is running remove that plug you will seee what i mean instantly stops.if your alternater is on drivers side. I put a 55-60 thermostat housing on there.it almost comes out straight.than got a 68 firebird with a 400 engine top hose. I put a temp guage in right of housing also it didnt hit it. cleared it all.the thermo housing i bought at pep boys. if you need number off hose let me know ill get it for you.i also got a picture of it but cant figure out how to get it here.

Thanks - that was what was causing the high pitch sound. I took the second PVC valve out and put a breather cap in and it stopped making the sound. Thanks for the help!!!
