Guys the seller says it's a 1LE P/S Gear Box. I read on third gen.org that the part # stamped into this gear box (26000525) was used by the RWD Cutlass, Buick Grand National and other GM cars. Just because it has a large Z cast into the box does not mean it's a Z28. Heck I have seen 396 engines out of 1960's Chevelle's with the Z casting. It's just the foundry casting. I sent him an e-mail stating that as well and a link to a 396 block out of a 1966 Chevelle on e-bay with the Z casting. He hasn't responded to that e-mail but he did respond to my first e-mail and said it's a 1LE Box. I'm not 100% certain it is.

OK---I'm calling all the experts here----Is this a 1LE or IROC-Z Gear box or isn't it. Here is the link http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/82-92-Chevy-Camaro-1LE-Power-STEERING-BOX-IROC-Z-z28_W0QQitemZ260122111800QQihZ016QQcategoryZ33589Q QrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

All replies are welcomed!!

Thanks!!

Thanks Hatya!! I saw that thread on thirdgen.org when I e-mailed the seller. I forgot to bookmark it and had a hard time finding it. Looks like it could go either way.

I assume that a 1LE is a code for a Camaro cop car.

The number on the gear housing is a casting number and gives no clue as to what is inside the gear.

There were only three power steering gears that were available in the Camaro during 1989.
There was a Z28 - 12.7:1 with a pitman arm travel of 70 degrees
There was a FE2 Level 1 - 12.7:1 with a pitman arm travel of 64 degrees
And there was a base - 14:1 with a pitman arm travel of 70 degrees.

Now the travel and a gear ratio translates to this:
Z28 gear - 12.7 X 70 deg / 360 = 2.47 turns lock to lock
FE2 gear - 12.7 X 64 deg / 360 = 2.25 turns lock to lock
Base gear - 14 X 70 deg / 360 = 2.72 turns lock to lock

You might as the seller to carefully count the number of turns on the input shaft from full lock to full lock. Since the number of turns is different by a full 1/4 turn it may be possible to sort out the gear (assuming that it really is a Camaro gear.) The above may give you a clue as to what is inside.
