: GM Fake Wood Wheel

I just installed an original GM Walnut in my 67 coupe. There's no question that it looks a lot nicer than the original plastic wheel. Beyond appearances, there are pluses and minuses, some that I was not prepared for. I like the grip of the wood wheel a lot better. The 'finger slots' on the back are much deeper and they feel like they are a bit farther apart than those on the plastic wheel. The wheel feels like it might be a little bit closer to me, but not enough to get excited about.

The one thing that will take a bit of getting used to is that the wood wheel gives a much harsher feel to the road. It seems to magnify every crack and bump in the road. The plastic wheel absorbed a lot more road shock than I ever realized. The metal spokes on the wood wheels are very unforgiving. I think I finally understand why so many wood wheels are cracked. I won't be grabbing the spokes to make turns anymore either.

I'm still glad I made the switch.

Yeah, be careful. Don't get into a habit of putting your finger in the slot of the spoke of that wood wheel. If you hit a pothole of something that could snap that wheel in another direction you'll be in for a big surprise.
