In a frame off restoration, is it best to take the glass out of the doors?

Does it matter if they're power windows?

Should the doors come off too?

I'd say yes. It's a good opportunity to clean up and check out 40 year old gunky mechanisms and refinish the insides of the doors.

Also... if things will be media blasted... well, my door windows each have this cute lil circle in em... the PO pulled the handles and door locks and blasted the door skins... guess he didn't bother to tape up the door lock holes.

When I pulled the door guts apart, the window channels and such were full of this lovely mix of new and old grease, general crud, and blasing media.

I remove the door guts, those poor regulators can take a bunch of abuse over the years. Not only do they need to be cleaned up, but many times parts need to be repaired or replaced. There's nothing worse than a window that doesn't go up and down smoothly....well I guess there are worse things. ;)

Here's some 67 door guts:

What year?

Remove armrests, window cranks, door handle, if it's a 69 remove the door lock knob. Remove about four screws along the bottom of the door panel and it should pop off.

Use the loose window crank to lower the window so that you can see the horizontal track that the glass is bolted to. Remove two nuts and lift the glass out the top of the door (can be a PITA)....You'll also have to remove the window stops to get the glass out. Guys, what did I forget?

Once the glass is out you should be able to figure out by looking at it what to unbolt or unscrew to get the rest of the parts out.

I have to remove the rear door panels on my 68 RS restoration project.

The windows are power and stuck in the up position.

Any advice?

I don't recall any screws holding the rear panel, just remove the seat bottom and windlace (there's a little screw that holds the top of the windlace...might be a problem if you can't get the windows down.

Jim,
I found the same problem on my sand blasted doors. In my case, they blasted the inside of the doors, so there was lots of frosted glass!!

Back to the ? about if the windows should be removed for a frame off restoration ,why wouldn't you want to remve them? How bad would it suck to get the car done take it out for the first time and have a window fall off the track because you didn't slurge and replace the window rollers? I'm not knocking anyone here but when I hear frame off restoration to me that means every piece of the car should be repaired rebuilt or replaced. that is why these projects take time and cost money. Just my thoughts.

Does anybody know why the title of this thread is "How do you remove the back door panels?" and you are talking about glass?
I am just confused

There were 2 posts following the same problem in 2 different forums, the mod merged them together.
