Big Steve,
Do you have the Fisher Body Book? In it is a picture to show you how the seal is mounted. It meets at the center bottom of the drip rail and it is glued in.

I used black 3M weather strip aheasive and just glued the corners and where the 2 ends meet. Do a dry trial fit, you can stretch the seal ever so slightly to get it to pop into the channel easier. Be sure to help it relax back into place after each straight section. Look at the end cut starting at the trunk lock the wave comes at you not at the trunk, I have seen some lately in backwards.

What I recommend is this. Let the seal rest (on the floor) stretched out for an hour or two. Fit the seal into the channel but don't trim the end yet. The ends should meet just above the trunk lock. Let this rest overnight or for a few hours. Starting at the uncut or yet to be uncut side, remove about 2 feet at a time and using the weatherstrip adhesive, glue it into place (don't use to much adhesive), fitting it as you move along. Work your way along the entire length this way. When you are done and the ends meet above the lock, trim the seal to fit, leaving it 1/8 inch longer than needed. Apply some adhesive to the trimmed end and butt it against the uncut end while seating it in the groove. Let this rest for a few hours then close the trunk and let it sit overnight. This should do it.

Jim - Sounds like you had kind of a funky seal, why the need to lay it out on the floor for a couple hrs and leave it in place over night on the trial fit?

I used a Metro Seal and was done with it in about 20 minutes.

New weatherstrips come with the mold release compound still on the rubber; if you don't clean them thoroughly with alcohol first, the adhesive won't stick.

John - I have only seen that on very limited aftermarket rubber these days. I think a lot of manufactures are cleaning things up before packaging or something. I just did trunk molding, metro and another brand I don't recall on 2 cars and they had no coating on them.. I installed a hood seal not too long ago and it needed to be cleaned with alcohol as you mention...

Stretching the seal also allows the deck lid to sit flush with the quarters. Too many guys just put the seal in and have to slam the lid to close it and the lid sits above the quarters which looks really bad.

softseal = SLAM to close...... think about metro!

With the Metro I actually compressed it to use just a bit more to insure the cut ends stayed together... Trunk shuts fine with no force required.

Steve Put Your Seal In Without Glue Just Glue Where The Two Ends Meet At The Trunk Lock With A Little Super Glue Hold For A Few Seconds And You Should Be Done, Dont Make A Mess With All Kinds Of Glue.

Never have used glue except on the ends. Seal seams to stay in place ok

Dennis, i had no problems with the seal, it was coiled up in the package for about a year or so. I opened it up, stretched it out and let it "relax" a bit before I installed it. Went in easy with no twisting or any other goober to mess me up. I found by letting the seal relax before install and after I set it in the channel. I had nothing I had to fight or question. It all fit well, sealed like it should, and only then did I use adhesive and trim the butt end.

Just my two cents; but I originally bought a SoftSeal trunk seal and no matter how long I let is set, I couldn't get the trunk to close correctly without slamming it so hard I thought that the spoiler would come loose.
I bought a new one from Steele, put it in place, and the trunk shuts very easily now.
