TSTONE Jun 8th, 07, 06:59 AM normal - whats happening is that you have condensation build up in your mufflers and it's mixing with carbon TSTONE Jun 8th, 07, 07:00 AM if you want to try and minimize it - try taking an hour long fwy trip it should burn/blow most of it out MrCow350 Jun 8th, 07, 07:17 AM Thanks. Larger Dave Jun 8th, 07, 01:40 PM That same watery mix is also in your crank case. Condensate gets by the rings as steam and condenses in the pan. Unless you run the motor for more than 15 minutes to heat the oil up above the boiling point the water builds up. Who really wants water in their oil? Ignore the price of gas, take your car out for a nice drive. Large Dave Rodder Jun 9th, 07, 12:12 AM Gasoline is made of hydrocarbons, which are made up of hydrogen and carbon. When you burn them with oxygen, ideally you get CO2 and H2O as the exhaust. The exhaust is really hot, so the H2O is steam. What is happening when you first start your car is that the exhaust system is cold enough to condense a lot of that steam back to liquid water before it hits the atmosphere. Interesting side note... Gasoline burns to yield about equal parts CO2 and H2O. Natural gas (mostly methane) on the other hand burns to yield about twice as much H2O as CO2, and you can see the difference at the tailpipe. I had a '91 longbed truck running natural gas (http://www.blown.net/ngv.html), and even with a hot exhaust on a warm day, a visible stream of liquid water would drip out of the tailpipes through most of 1st gear on acceleration runs. fatblock Jun 9th, 07, 06:15 PM Normal..no need to worry.Drill a 1/8th inch hole in the rear of your mufflers under your tailpipe outlets. Not only will this drain built up condensation on multiple cold starts..it will prolong the life of the muffler.A .125" hole will not constitute an exhaust leak..and many mufflers are are so equipped, especially in freezing climates that can ice up and lead to a no start.Seen it many times. |
