View Full Version : Tow your boat to lake with your Camaro anyone??
Daytona Yellow 69 Z/28 Jun 12th, 07, 12:26 PM I thought you all might get a good laugh:D out of this one. I know there has been dicussion in the past about trailer hitches but maybey not everybody has actually seen one on a 68 Camaro. This is the Car I just bought that had been sitting in an old building since the 70's.
By the way I have already removed the hitch:hurray: :D

Cal69 Jun 12th, 07, 01:20 PM Funny you ask. I was driving on the highway over Memorial Day as some guy in a '68 was towing a trailer with a couple of dirt bikes. It's rare to even see a 1st gen on the highway anymore, much less with a trailer in tow. I literally had to do a double take to make sure my eyes saw it correctly.
I can't imagine towing a ski boat with a Camaro but I know lots of people did it in the 70's.
DjD Jun 12th, 07, 01:44 PM We used a '69 Z/28 to tow a 17' outboard ski boat for a couple summers back in '74-'75... Hard on the clutch pulling out on a steep ramp but not too bad otherwise.
Steptoe Jun 12th, 07, 02:44 PM All those horses up front, dont just need to be used to go fast.
Have used as a tow vechile for over 20 yrs, everything from firewood on the farm, camping trips, nearly 2 tonne of builders mix (concret) to transporter for my other vintage/classic cars....see avatar to the left.
The 2 tonne NETT (that was confirmed on a weigh bridge) That I knew was on the back, pulled fine, but would not have been a comfortable long distance trip...thu if I had to, I would.
opps no avatar lol

Jeff H Jun 12th, 07, 04:06 PM The previous 69 Z28 JL8 car I had was used to tow at some point in it's life. It still had the wire harness in the trunk and you could see the holes where the hitch had been bolted to the bumper and lower rear valance.
gmpauly Jun 12th, 07, 11:35 PM My 69 convertible had holes drilled in it for a tow hitch when I bought it.
blue ss Jun 13th, 07, 05:59 AM You could realy smoke the tires with a trailer for drag weight, It just wouldnt look right.
Jeff H Jun 13th, 07, 07:14 AM Here you go. This was back in April when I put my boat back in for the season.

Not an unusual sight at all. Camaros were used as daily drivers by thousands of folks when they were in production, and this would include towing trailers.

:eek: I was only joking about a boat because this little RS had a hitch. That is a pretty scary picture you posted there, a wet ramp, lose a little traction and your SS is going for a swim.
By the way I love those stripes you have on your SS:thumbsup: I would love to add those to my 00 SS, Can I ask where you bought them?
:beers:
Thanks,
Nick
craggar1 Jun 13th, 07, 08:59 AM I use to tow a Combi Camp all over the place with my 2nd gen, including the track.

Jeff H Jun 13th, 07, 03:58 PM No problems on a clean ramp. Here's a picture from 2 weeks later after we had a flood and the ramp had 5" of mud on it. It took me about 10 minutes to get back up the ramp with the empty trailer. The car kept kicking out to the left until I made it over to the rocks. The stripes were put on by the previous owner and they are the 35th anniv reproduction stripes. Shoot me a PM and I'll tell you the company, I don't want to cause any problems but they're well known.

Steptoe Jun 13th, 07, 05:14 PM A little trick when pulling the boat out....
Disconnect the trailer, take the car up to good surface, hook a tow rope to the trailer , the other end , once around the tow ball then twist 3 or 4 times down the main rope...and some one just hold the end...the rope binds on its self, and pull the boat up to good ground....
If there is little room for the car to manover at the top, one smiply takes up the slak each time .
I used to have a 18 ft with 105 hp chrysler, under floor gas and water tanks, sort of a caravan on water...there where several very steep boat ramps around the harbour that where just too steep/slippery to pull up unless had a tractor.
