Hello All,

Tonight I met a guy who had what he claimed to be a 68 RS. Without the window sticker how can one tell if it is a true RS. It has the guage package, tic tac clock and it's a 4 sp with a 327. I'm going to see the car tomorrow. What should I look for and how much is it worth?

RallySports have different tail lights, the reverse lights are mounted on the rear lower valence and the wires for them come through the trunk floor. Also, their should be vacuum lines coming out of the firewall somewhere by the master cylinder which come from the light switch. Is all the Rallysport lighting and grill in place? Look for holes in the inner fenders where the vacuum tank would be located if the stuff isn't actually on the car. My 68 came without any RS equipment on it when I bought it last year, but the backup lights were where they should be and factory punched and the headlight switch was still in place with two vacuum lines coming throught the firewall, as well as one headlight door sitting inside the car. My fenders however were not RS fender because the mounting tabs were not far enough back. This should pretty much give you what you need to determine if it is real or not.

Thanks for the info, would a true RS have drum brakes all around and a 10 bolt rear?

Yes. Disc brakes were only mandatory on Z/28's in 68. An unless it was a SS or a Z/28 it would not get a 12 Bolt. There may be exceptions I am not aware of such as the 275 horse 327???

Remember a RS was nothing more than an aperiance package. you could get a 6 cyclinder in a RS.

I hope this helps

aero, and Nick, RS 'could' have drum brakes or disc brakes, 6 cyl or 8 cyl, auto or stick shift, etc... RS was ONLY an appearence package and no drive train components were part of the RS. So, more accurately, a true RS "could" have drums all around and 10 bolt but it also "could" have disc brakes and 12 bolt. :) in addition an RS "could" be a Z or SS too. :)
