I've read in several different places that the cowl area under the cowl panel is painted body color right up to the edge of the firewall , yet you NEVER see anyone do it. I know I've seen original cars with this area painted , but I'm starting to wonder if I'm the only one that thinks this ??

(on 69's specifically)

My 69 cowl is painted the body color. It is not the orginal paint, but I can see traces of the orginal paint underneth. I thought this part was painted before assembly?

My car is painted Lemans Blue and the area under the cowl panel is painted black. The body shop asked me when they were painting the car what I wanted to do and I didn't want it the same color.
Personal preference.

Being that it is a sensitive area for rust, I am doing one right now with POR15. I then can paint it the body color or leave it black. It won't make a difference because the car will be black someday anyways.

GM/Fisher paint specification called for this area to receive blackout treatment for all Non black body color cars. Was done to prevent the wiper linkage (flat-black) from showing inside the cowl area on lighter body cars.

Whether it was done on all cars at both assembly plants is debatable, as is whether it was flat black, 10% gloss or 30% gloss black paint.

This applies to the area under the cowl, down in the hole under the top of the firewall. The top of the firewall was body colored, unless the car had Z28 style stripes in which case the top of the cowl is stripe color.
