He guys,

I don't know if this is the correct section to post this let me know if not. I presently have a 69 Z original car. I have never had a convertible before. My neighbor has a 69 Z11 RS/SS Pace Car that has been in his garage for 15 years and he has always said he was going to restore it. Well over the weekend he said he will sell it to me. It is a non numbers matching 350 with the original 4 speed and rear. The car is in overall good shape. If you wanted it could be a daily driver I just to give you a base line of its shape. It has 2 fuel lines, 5 leaf springs, deluxe door panels, a woodgrain dash and gauges. I just want to make sure that it's a real Z11. He has had the car for over 22 years I have know him for 15 years. I have no reason to question because he has had the car so long. Way before the market went nuts.

But here is my question he said years ago someone tried to steal the cowl tag and it's off the car. I have seen the tag and it is a Z11 tag. So I am certain he isn't pulling a fast one. I just want to be sure. So what else should I be looking for. Is there any other tell tale signs that it's an original Z11 car?

Also like I said it's in good shape and will need to be restored but I would'nt have a problem crusin it to a local cruise on a Friday or Saturday night. He want's 20/K for the car what do you guys think? I think it's a good deal. Let me know.

Dave

If it's a solid car, that a good price!
The cowl tag is everything! Get it's build date and other details such as complete option list and VIN and head on over to:
www.camaropacecars.com

You find a bunch of Z11 owners that can answer every question you have.
Good luck!

Dave is there a N or L in the VIN ? If its L then there is no Z11 on the trim tag. Los cars didnt have it in the pace cars they built. If it is N is the VIN then the rest of the numbers of off the trim tag MIGHT help to determine if that trim tag is in line with the VIN. They are sorta kinda related in timing of build. Post all the numbers of the VIN and trim tag and go from there. :)

Dear Sir, The dual fuel lines, one being a return line ... Ah humm !!! ... It is an SS ... Buy it fast before he changes his mind ... There is a local guy that owns the same car that you are looking at ... He told me how he got that car ... Just about the same way you got yours ... He saw one and bugged the guy forever until he finally decided to sell it to him ... What a find ... Los Angeles cars didn't use all of the fancy tagging that Norwood cars did ... But ... If it white ... Orange stripes ... "Official Pace Car" on the side ... houndtooth interior ... Anyways ... You get the point ...

Kevin, just to be helpfull here, if it is a Los car with no Z11 on the trim tag, a white ragtop could be cloned easily into a pace car look alike. An LM1 (Qjet carb.dual fuel lines) ragtop with dual exhaust and painted on stripes etc. could be passed as a Pace Car too. 5 leafs and dual fuel lines are not certain to be an SS in the 69 Los cars. If they guy owned it for 15 years, its unlikely it was cloned in those days and might very well be a Pace Car but knowing the VIN numbers and trim tag numbers will help eliminate most doubts. :)

Jim he said it has the Z11 on the tag, just that the tag was removed... Careful about time frames too, I looked at a '69 pace car 10 years ago and it had a block with a bolt on oil filter and road draft breather tube ('67 or earlier) but the '69 partial vin was on the pad...

It the car is in decent shape body wise $20k is a good deal in todays market...

Good eye Dennis, but my thought was that a tag off the car, "could" be from any camaro, as we've seen in the past with some folks. I doubt 15 years ago tag swapping was done, so its most likely the original tag and by posting the VIN he can confirm the right date numbers of the Tag and VIN.

Someone tried to steal the cowl tag and got as far as taking it off then the owner caught him and got it back? Get the cowl tag situation nailed down first. They absolutely were swaping/switching cowl tags from car to car twenty years ago.....and more.
