Can anyone give me some good advise on my doors? They are sagging and need help. I know I can replace the hinges but is there a more reasonable way to do it? Complete hinges are expensive. Has anyone tried to rebuild the old door hinges with any success. If I can I would rather spend two hundred dollars on something else.
Thanks Dan

I have tried to rebuild door hinges before and I had a little bit of luck. You will have a good time getting the spring back in there.

They make a tool to collapse the spring, works well. Can't remember cost, though,20$?The hinges are easy to rebuild,as long as the pins havn't worn into the hinges.

I replaced the springs in my hinges by first compressing them in a vise and then putting safety wire through them in the compressed state. They slid right in place. I then just cut the wires and they were good to go.
I got this idea from this wonderful site! http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif

I did the same thing that joe G did but when I was clamping it up in the vise to compress it for the wire, it took off like a rocket. Luckely nobody was around. I have rebuilt hinges that have had the pins worn right into the hinge bracket. I have a mill at my disposal so it was really easy. I bored out the holes, made steel bushings and welded them in and reinstalled the normal bushings like they were meant to be.

You might check with Year One I believe they have a hinge exchange program for about half what it costs for complete new ones. They stick you with a $300 core charge for you old ones though. I haven't actually used them but thought you might consider this.

I have restored hinges with the pin worn into them, just found bushings with bigger o.d. and driled the hinges for that exact measurement. That in the case where there isn't excesive wear.

Good point, 69er! I neglected to add that I was afraid the spring would fly out so I put the wire on opposite sides of the spring and tightend the wire each time I tightened the vise.
I also had my safety glasses on (always).
Those springs have a lot of force and can cause serious injury.
Sometimes I just assume other folks approach work with safety in mind, which can be a mistake! http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif
