View Full Version : Will stock driveline take 500hp?
Strick Jul 2nd, 07, 11:20 AM I am about to take the driveline in to the driveline shop and have it balanced and new HD U-joints installed. It seemed lighter than any driveshaft I have ever lifited. Will a stock '67 (6-cylinder) driveshaft handle 500hp?
Rich-Allen Jul 2nd, 07, 11:50 AM Dave, my recent motor upgrade is pushing 575 at the wheels and I decided to replace the entire stock drive train.
Take a stock 1969 12 bolt posi, it's the very same one they used in the 400+ hp chevelles back in 69, it should support at least that. I don't think the 6cyl car came with heavy duty running gear did it?
FWIW, I would buy something more suited for your engine output. You would hate to lose a drive shaft at any speed.

Strick Jul 2nd, 07, 11:56 AM Thanks for the response Rich. I am putting a Ford 9" rear in the car, so I am good there. This drive shaft reminds me of my stock Vega before I put a 327 in it, back in the mid-70's.
I can tell you how to find out... :D

NOT funny - wiseguy! :noway:
wiskeesour Jul 2nd, 07, 12:44 PM Drive shaft comin loose at 70MPH isnt pretty. I would opt for a bigger shaft myself. Just my .02
craggar1 Jul 2nd, 07, 01:53 PM I'm guessing it's 2.75"X.065 tubing with 1310 ujoints which I have seen work in 10 second cars but there is no way I would chance it. A good 3X.083 or even 3.5"X.083 d/s with 1350 series ujoints will last for ever and is a lot better then fixing all the broken and damaged pieces for breaking a ujoint in the stock one. Complete with tranny yoke you should be able to get one for $400. or so.
Rodder Jul 2nd, 07, 03:07 PM I paid $345 shipped for a new custom length 3" steel driveshaft with 1350 u-joints and a new T56 slip yoke from Driveline Solutions, and only took about a week to get it.
Straight-line-69 Jul 2nd, 07, 10:36 PM Agree with the above,..if you plan on any traction, spend the money on Spicer 1350's (the nine inch already has the 1350 yoke) and a good aftermarket driveshaft.
Also, at 500 ponies, avoid cheap motor mounts, non-SFI flywheel, weak axles, and of course you'll need some sub-frame connectors.
500 is the number where it gets expensive or scarey,..take your pick.
Strick Jul 2nd, 07, 11:37 PM Thanks guys (except you Dennis :p)! I called the local driveline shop to price their recommended driveshaft. $285 with my yoke. Summit has an Inland Empire driveline for 67-69 camaro with TH350 for $392.00. Here is the description:
Made from 6061-T6 aluminum, their 3 in. diameter tubes are custom-drawn for consistent strength, and the forged yokes are welded-on using state-of-the-art processes for improved reliability. They're accepted for use in most NHRA and all IHRA classes.
This is way I will probably go.
craggar1 Jul 3rd, 07, 05:15 AM If you don't change your tranny yoke then that is still the weak link because you will have a conversion ujoint in there. For the little extra change everything up.
