View Full Version : Question on Hurst Comp Plus shifter
viperjesse Jul 2nd, 07, 05:47 PM I bought a nice used Hurst Competition Plus shifter. I have it mounted in the bench vise with pads and no mechanism blocked.
I can manually operate 1&2 and 3&4 gear levers just fine but I can not get it to engage into reverse and get that lever to move.
To shift into reverse you pull the shifter handle toward your leg ( under spring pressure) and shift up right? I can't get the handle to move in that direction at all.
Any ideas on this is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
JZ
JimM Jul 2nd, 07, 06:49 PM you push to the right and pull the lever towards you (down) unlessed the tko has me confused
Everett#2390 Jul 2nd, 07, 06:54 PM Muncie 4-spd or Saginaw 4-spd, pull left through the spring tension, push lever forward for reverse.
JimM Jul 2nd, 07, 08:36 PM hehe, guess it is the tko that's right and back.
madmax87 Jul 2nd, 07, 09:18 PM Did you try putting the alignment pin in and center all 3 mech, then remove pin and try it. Sometimes it is a left, slightly down, then up.
viperjesse Jul 3rd, 07, 05:30 AM Yes I inserted the neutral pin and tried it.
Is it possible I'm not getting enough leverage without the shifter handle bolted on? The shifter is not mounted.
I'm trying this by hand without the handle on.
Thanks
JZ
JimM Jul 3rd, 07, 05:46 AM I'd call that very possible. It takes quite a push to get it to go. Also, with the levers flopping around that dould complicate things too. The levers have to be exactly in the neutral position.
jr68 Jul 3rd, 07, 05:49 AM ... I bet it would make a difference. I have a Competition Plus and it does take a little more grunt to get it into reverse.
Everett#2390 Jul 3rd, 07, 07:17 AM I'm trying this by hand without the handle on.
Thanks JZYou need the handle for leverage.
68greg Jul 3rd, 07, 10:26 AM There is a pin in the back of the shifter 1/2" dim. That needs to extend beyond mounting surface. I bet you have it in a vice and clamped against that pin. I know since it happened to me. I even bought a new and had the same problem so I knew it wasn't the shifter it was me. Look at back of shifter
viperjesse Jul 3rd, 07, 01:35 PM The 1/2" pin is moving freely in and out.
I'll bolt it up and give it a try, the shifter looke to be in excellent condition so I don't think it has a problem.
Thanks
JZ

Its a well made shifter that does require force to get it in reverse. Mount it and use the handle to see how stiff it is to get into reverse. Its made that was to prevent reverse-error shifting :)
