I just found a 70 Camaro split bumper FOR SALE. I know nothing about 2nd gen camaros. What do I look for on the trim tag to tell me if it is something special or just a average 70 Camaro? Are there x codes like 69 camaros? It has split bumper with turn signal beside headlights. How many had this option? No drivetrain in the car. No interior. Does the vin # tell you V8 or 6cylinder like 69s?
I am going to look at the car this afternoon(if it has not sold). I just would like to know what to check when I get there.
Thanks Team Camaro.

"Split bumper" is a term applied to the RS option but be aware that plenty of guys put those bumpers on non-RS cars. A true RS has a different grille and lower panel-the directional lamps were next to the headlamps.

There were no X codes but Norwood-built cars do have some info on the tag-Z28 for example.

'70s do not have the parts availability of 1st gens; some items are very difficult to locate and are not reproduced. I hear interior pieces can be real tough. 2nd gens also have windshield pillar and rear frame rail rust issues.

As William said, split bumpers are a part of the RS (rally sport) option. Many cars have had the rs bumpers added (or the center part of the bumper cut with a hack saw). A true RS will have a 2" rubber endura nose as a grill extension, round driving lights above the bumper (about as big as a 69 camaro's) and not have the squarish driving lights under the bumper. Chrome accent trim, to include chrome trim on the inside of the tailights between the red plastic pieces. Look for the RS emblum on the steering wheel shroud. The 70 steering wheel shroud was a one year only item, so that is hard to fake.

Of course, most of the above are repoped, so look for original parts, as William said, there are not nearly as many parts repoped, so if it is original parts, then there is a better chance that they came on that car if all of the other things add up.

why's everything got to revolve around 69's . ? ? You know on the 67's , 68's , 69's , 70's . etc.. .you can tell if it was born originally with a V8 or not . Now the trim on top of the cowl tag will tell you the options.... Z22 I think is for the RS option .. it would straight out say Z28 if it was a Z28. Go check out / surf around over at www.nastyz28.com (http://www.nastyz28.com) and you will find all your answers on that tag.

Dead give away would be the round parking lights next to the headlights and that extra nose piece.. and split front bumpers , for the RS option.

good luck !

Besides the front clip telltale signs already mentioned above, look for the following also.
True RS (RPO Z22) cars will have the hidden wiper setup. They all were delivered with stainless trim at the rear of the hood, the rear tips of the front fenders and at the top of the doors. Also look for the stainless trim roof moldings. Other things to look for is the body colored tape insert on the outside door handles and the rear tailights will have two stainless rings (the second one being around the white reverse backup lense).
Out of 124,889 Camaros built in 1970, 27,136 were equipped with the RS option.
Trim tags and VIN tags for 1970 will not give you any information to tell you it is a true RS.:beers:

Look for "Z28" or ".28" or "LS3" or "Z27" or "L78" on the trim tag as possible indicators of something special. As for the RS split bumper, make sure it has the round front parking lights inside the bumpers and not the more rectangular style under the bumper.

With everyone describing how they look, figured I'd supply a pic of mine for a visual. Also, I think most, if not all, of the RS front end parts are repopped now.

The 1970 Camaros are going up in value. Real RS / Z28 cars in original condition are high dollar. Not as high as a 69 but it appears there are less 1970's left vs the 69's. I like the fact that I have a car you don't see as much. 500 horsepower helps too lol. It is not cheap to convert to an RS option. So if all the right stuff is there then you are on the right track.

they made nearly 3 x the number of 69's as 70's. 20302 vs 8733

a local 69 Z RS owner (30 years) finally got a taste of the TORQUE and HANDLING the 70 has and now he doesn't drive his 69 anymore ....

both his 69 & his newly acquired 70 are Daytona Yellow RS 4 speed cars ...

Yep..... Everyone who rides in my 70 Z CoPo is amazed by the tourqe of the LT1! 69's are still the best looking though!
