On my 12 bolt ring and pinion change, here are my first gear marks. How much do I tweak? Take off .005"? Thanks.

Looks pretty good. I recommend putting a drop or two of gear oil on your brush and mix it with the marking compound to thin it a little. Use an axle to turn everything and make 4 or 5 rounds in both directions to get the pattern a little more clear. You have a small burr on one of the teeth on the coast side. Notice the skip mark on 2 of the teeth. Check the edge of the teeth for a very small burr. You can remove it with a small deburring stone or knife hone.

Is this any better?

A little better. I'd go about .002 or .003 thicker on the pinion shim and try again. Only mark about 3 teeth next to each other so that there isn't so much compound on the gears. Run the gears through a few more times to wipe off a little more of it.

Okay, here's my next set. I had a hard time getting a clear defined coast pattern. If this one is good, I need to put the REAL bearing on (not the slip bearing) and have you verify that that pattern is good. Thanks for all of the help.

That one looks pretty good. Put on the other bearing and see what it looks like. You might have to make one more adjustment with the other bearing.

So I think I messed up. The first one on this thread was .031, the second one was .027 (I went the wrong direction).

Here's .033:

That's good. See how it looks with the other bearing.

After a big fiasco I am now ready with the real bearing. How's this?

Bryan, is that your first ?

I did one a while back and so far so good (Thanks again Freddie).

Yes it is. A real learning experience. I think I could bust out a second one WAY quicker.

Yep. Plus I didn't use a slip fit bearing  But got the pinion on 1st shot (Did a lot of measuring).
But got a 12 bolt waiting for $$$.

I have been using a super shim kit and a solid pinion spacer kit when i do ring and pinions. Makes life much easier! I just honed out a new pinion bearing for my pinion depth settings. What is the backlash on it?
