New to your site:cool:. I'm in my 50's and just bought a new toy:). My Camaro has a stroker with a 3000 stall and 4.10 gears. I'm turning 3200 rpm's at 55mph. I would like to get the rpm's down because i have to go on the highway to get most places and i'm not going to be racing it in the 1/4 mile. Just want to have some good street fun. Which gears do you prefer and how many rpm's do you drop per gear ratio. thanks Greg

Here's a calculator you can use:

Just my .02 here, consider 3.73 or 3.42 for a sbc. Rpm still in the 3k range at 70 mph.

I have 3.73's and 3000 stall... I run 3000rpm's at 65 on 27.5" tall tires.
I would look at a taller tire and 3.55's or numerically lower.

I've never played with the calculators or given it any thought if I do it right. I don't get too worried about precision on this deal. YET. So I'm gonna put this out there and let onovakind tell me if I'm halfassed right.

I just do it by percentage
going from 411 to 373 is about 10%, so 10% on 3200 rpm is 320 rpm or about 2900 rpm at 55mph.

Same on tire. Divide diameters. I am going from a 29 to a 33 and thats like over 10% so I'm expecting to drop about 700 RPM at the finish line off my 7000 for 6300ish. Course Idunno what RPM I cross the line at, all I'm doing is hanging on baby. But I think I had my light at 7 once and saw it go off. But I usually ignore the light and listen to the engine.

Am I all wet onovakind?

onovakind67, thanks for the great website:thumbsup: and i thank all of you for your input. You all have many post's and must know your stuff! The guy i purchased the Camaro from showed me a couple of his time slips and his best time was 12.57 with slick's in the 1/4 mile. I just went out and check to see what size tire was on the rear and there P235/60R15's which come out to be 26'' tires. The rear rims are 8". I think i will put on some P275/60R15's which show's there 28" and go with the 3.42 gears. How does that sound for the street. thanks all:beers:

I have 3.42 gears with 255/60-15 tires and it is a pleasure to cruse on the interstate at 80. The tires are 27.1 inches tall and I am turning 2700 RPM at 60 MPH. Changing from 4.10’s to 3.42’s will also greatly improve your fuel mileage.

I think the 275 tires are a bit to wide and might have some rubbing issues.

You must be running less than 1.1 final drive , @ 80?.

HMM! Maybe i should go with the P255/70R15's. There 29.1" tall. But i like my wheel wells full of tire:D. I dont know the back spacing on the 8" rims but maybe if there the right back spacing i could still shove the 275's in there??
