: Convertible Weights

Hope someone out there can answer this one. In the trunk of my 67 convertible there are two 25lb weights. What purpose do they serve? What problems would arise if I removed them?

I have a 68 conv. and there are 4 "cocktail shakers" (weights). 2 in the trunk on each side, and 2 in the front behind and to the outer side at the headlites. It is my understanding that these are for stability and vibration dampening as the convertibles obviously do not have the same structural stiffness of their sister coupes.

Someone else may have more info along this line.

There are two in the front of the car just forward of the inner fender well also. The "cans" contain springs and oil and the consensus is that they are used to dampen vibrations that are unique to the convertible due to decreased body stiffness because there is no roof.

Some people remove them to get rid of the weight for racing purposes. If you are driving yours mainly on the street, I would keep them in.

Thanks, just couldnt see what use they were. This is a ground-up rebuild anyway and since chassis mods are in the plans I think we'll probably discard them.

Autodr, Sell em! I assume discard meant trash. There are a lot of convert owners who would like the ones they threw out back! Kevin

List them here in the "For Sale" section... As stated there is always someone that got rid of the shakers and wants them back! Chevrolet didn't just put them there because they were cleaning house and could sneek the things out 4 to a car! I haven't seen any mods yet that provide body support to replace the dampening effect of the shakers.... You may find subframe connectors and suspension/subframe mods may make the need for the dampeners more noticable.

I'm guilty of throwing a set away years ago when I was young & dumb. "Dead weight" I thought...
Now, I own a 69 convt that has them missing.
Are they interchangeable between a 68 and 69?
