View Full Version : Installing a tach from the front of the cluster

A member here was kind enough to send me the cut-out pattern for the tach, but I never had time to do anything with it until today. Some of you know I just completed installing a TKO-600, and for me, this was very time consuming.

So today I decided to attack the tach. First order of business was to locate where the hell the previous owner ran the "tach-out" wire from the MSD. It was wrapped with a bunch of other wires 3" from the MSD box, but I found it...eventually:). I had been perplexed about its whereabouts because the car never had a tach. It ran through the wall and was all coiled up under the carpet at the top of the tunnel. I was just relieved to find it!

So, I was replacing the fuel gauge in the dash (already installed a 4 pod console unit w/fuel last week). Trex70 mentioned that he had to install his tach from the front because someone had glued his dash pad down. But I got to thinking it might be easier than taking so many things apart to get the cluster out. So....I installed it from the front! Worked like a charm. I inverted the drawing and glued it onto the cluster surface. Then I started to cut it out with a razor knife (the pattern). Then I figured...what the hell....I just got a Dremel with a milling bit and had at it. I had to make 2 minor "re-cuts" and it fit in snugly. I put terminals on the old fuel gauge grd and pwr wires, and then connected the coil wire. I crossed my fingers and started the car....voila! It works!!!

The only thing I had to remove was my radio (for reach sake), and I had to make sure to have the wires behind the dash pushed back and out of the way of the Dremel bit. While doing it this way had its own challenges, I would think this is a lot easier than taking out the cluster.

The one disappointment: After connecting the fuel sending wire to the new pod fuel gauge, it still doesn't work. Of course, the old fuel gauge I replaced with the tach didn't work, so it wasn't a shock:). And I have a new sending unit, tank and 3/8" fuel line already in the garage...waiting for me to get some time.

Thanks for the info... been thinking of adding a tach as well... get any pics?

I didn't take any...yet. It's overcast here and I just cleaned off all my plugs and covered her back up. It's supposed to rain here tomorow, but I'll snap some as soon as I get the chance.

For what it's worth, I would advocate that a repro tach be installed from the front, not the rear. Unless someone can cite something I'm missing, I see no reason to pull out the dash cluster to do this. You will have to remove your radio (for reach sake), but you have to do that anyway...plus a bunch of other disconnects to remove the cluster panel. The other simple thing to remember is that when you use a Dremel to cut it out, that you make sure any wiring behind that gauge spot is moved away while you cut. Seriously, personally, I would never bother removing the dash pad, steering wheel brace, radio, light knobs, switches, harnesses behind the cluster etc., when it can easily be done right from the front. If it hadn't been for a member lamenting that he had to do it from the front because of a glued down dash pad, I'd have probably never thought to do it this way. I don't think he realized how much time he saved.

Everything I read from searching threads had me a little anxious about installing a tach in place of the stock fuel gauge. But in reality, this was more simple than most "additions" I've made. Sometimes it pays to think outside the box

And a special thanks, once again, to Mark x22 for sending me the scale drawing. I had to trim nearly 1/8" off the circumference of the pattern, but the inner markings were spot-on.

Cool changes you added to the pattern, Mark. I would suggest that anyone who might use it, use the outer circumference line first, and then see how it fits before trimming it back. It really won't matter if it isn't trimmed perfect either, as long as the fuel gauge holes are lined up.

I just went and snapped a pic for another thread, so here's one of the tach I put in from the front of the cluster:

Nice neat install....
Now anyone want to venture a comment on whether I can install a centre gas gauge in the same manner?

I'd like the tach/dash fuel gauge but not interested in doing the console gauges....

The key is alignment, reachability, & clearance. As long as you make sure you have clearance in the back, you're free to Dremel from the front. What I find kind of moot, is that all the threads about installing the tach were pretty anal about getting the "texas" shape (as someone described it) cut out perfect. Mine is spot-on, but it wouldn't really matter if you cut a big friggin' square out, as long as the 3 bolt holes are aligned correctly and you have room to stick the "bulk" of the gauge through the hole. It's not like you'd be ruining your dash, because you couldn't ever put a fuel gauge back in without constructing some kind of new bridge across the back center of the dash cavity. And you could do this just as easily with a big hole. Don't get me wrong here, as I'm not advocating doing it sloppy, as I'm kind of a perfectionist, too. But I simply realized after I installed it that the perfection of the cut out was really kind of meaningless. It just would have been nice to have read a thread (when I was researching it) where someone said, "If you don't get the cut out perfect, don't worry about it." To the contrary, most seemed to suggest you had to get it perfect.

What a great site, I ask a question and get a wealth of experience in a matter of days. Really appreciate everyone's willingness to share their thoughts and experiences on swappin the gas guage for the tach. Walt69
