View Full Version : Which is better a 1969 Camaro X33 or X77 Z28
dhood Jul 6th, 07, 10:43 AM Hey guys I have an opportunity to purchase two 1969 Z/28 's and I can't buy 2 of them. On is an X33 and the other is an X77. They both are 4 speeds with original DZ engine and are both comparable in condition.
My question is what one will be more valuable in the long run the X33 or X77? What is the overall difference between the two codes? Thanks for your help.
Dave
rare4k Jul 6th, 07, 10:53 AM NO brainer the x33! has the better package it comes with the trim pack, gilles wheel chrome drip moulding chrome and some other trim pieces, also you can only get the RS package with the X33 not the X77 the X77 is a base Z

I don't think there would be significant difference in prices between an X-77 and a non RS X-33. Even with the RS package, I doubt it would be a $10K difference if both cars were restored to the same degree. My .02.
mb302rs Jul 6th, 07, 11:13 AM The X33 would be my choice all things being equal. For me ,the style trim would be worth 2-3 thousand more on a restored car. I'm one of those people that really likes the factory badges and brite work. JMO
BelAirBob Jul 6th, 07, 11:18 AM I agree if the X33 car is not brought back as an RS, but if you had an X33, why not add the RS equipment? Just makes financial sense. The price guides all give an RS car (assuming you convert the X33), a 15% bump over non-RS values. I think that in reality, its more like 20%,especially on the 69'. The 69' RS front grille makes for the most sinister looking car GM ever built... A crowd favorite, and worth much more than a std grille X77 car. Not only that, when it comes time to sell, it would sell that much quicker as well. I happen to have an X33D80 car,and its going to have the RS package. I searched out a real X33 for this reason....its the only one that could also have the RS package.
Dad had a 69' RS/Z one from 71-80',and I never quite got over that car :)
BERRY251 Jul 6th, 07, 11:32 AM Can I buy the other one??? ;)
William Jul 6th, 07, 11:34 AM Don't forget to factor in color.
I would rather have a flashy X77 Z/28 than an X33 in a poor color. I had a Z/28 in the late '70s with the light green standard interior; a real turn off. Our business also had a documented OE drivetrain '67 Z/28 in odd colors. Subsequent owners have had a tough time selling it.

I was thinking the same thing!
al8apexer Jul 6th, 07, 11:51 AM don't forget WHAT these cars are supposed to be
lightweight performance cars
the more "gingerbread" you put on them, the heavier they are
the Z28 was not intended to but a luxo barge, nor were COPO cars
so when you see them with power windows and extra weight adding options, the car is just not what the engineers / racers envisioned them to be
If you want a bunch of chrome, go buy a Buick or a Cadillac
YMMV, IMHO
I prefer the look of dog dish centers to chrome mags, so that makes me weird I guess

What do you consider "poor colors"?
Gary L Jul 6th, 07, 01:41 PM Are you just pulling someone's leg? How do you get a chance to choose? Are theses sitting at a dealer's lot somewhere? The way you say "they are both 4 speeds" leads me to believe something is not right. No mention of matching drive train or not. The one with all the right goodies is the one to buy. X77, X33 or RS doesn't matter. The seller whether it is you or someone else will go by current Z/28 prices period. JMHO.
William Jul 6th, 07, 01:59 PM Way back in the '90s the Camaro Corral magazine [still miss it...] ranked 1st gen colors; some added value, some diminished value. Here are the + and -.
$2000+
10 Tuxedo Black
52 Garnet Red
72 Hugger Orange
76 Daytona Yellow
-$500
57 Fathom Green
59 Frost Green
61 Burnished Brown
63 Champagne
65 Olympic Gold
Some may disagree with the rankings but the established tenet is that some colors are a tough sell.
dhood Jul 6th, 07, 03:21 PM Is either tag an indication of were it was built?
It's a local guy that has 6 Camaros in a garage. I have been talking to him for years.

What, no LeMans Blue or Rally Green on that list?
If those are 90's dollars, I wonder what it is in todays market.

The tag and VIN will tell you where and when they where built.
If you are seriously interested in buying a Camaro, please do lots of research and ask questions first, I don't like to see anyone get burned.

Yes the tag indicates where it was built. Any "X" code car was built only in Norwood, Ohio.
My comment about the 4 speed thing was because Z/28's only came with a 4speed. Goes w/o saying. Any other tranny and it was a transplant or a fake. Any chance to post pictures of the tags and cars?
Looking at your first posts on TC, you said you own an original Z and wanted to buy a convertible also. What happened to those two cars? Is the vert one of the 6 cars in the garage?
dhood Jul 6th, 07, 06:52 PM Yes but he wants too much money for the convertible because it's completely original and he changed his mind about selling it he is a very fickle person
Flynn69 Jul 6th, 07, 06:59 PM I have 3 issues of Camaro Coral Magazine. I,ll have to look it up to see if I have the color chart. They were restoring a ( Dusk Blue or a Lemans Blue) Z-28 .Can,t remember is it was an X-33 or X-77............

I am also suspicious. Perhaps the fact that he just recently joined and his previous posts might give a glimpse: http://www.camaros.net/forums/showpost.php?p=583574&postcount=9
I don't mean to judge anyone, but if you read all his previous posts you may see something as well.
dhood Jul 6th, 07, 08:27 PM If that were the case then why would I be submitting under the same name? Think about it?
I travel all over the midwest for my job and come upon cars all the time. I am not being deceptive what would that do for anyone? I just look for opportunities all over. But thanks for the support DBX1969!

I'm guessing the colors like LaMans Blue, Rally Green, Serria Fawn, Cortez Silver, etc. must be "netrual" 1st gen colors. No +/- value on them ... I guess. All nice colors though ... IMHO.

A base vert or SS? How can it be over priced and the Z/28's are not? 2+2 is not adding up.

Just someone goofin' around. Happens once in a while. Just have a little fun with it.

My guess would be burnish brown, frost green, maybe even butternut yellow..........

I just found it odd that your very first post on this site was advocating that switching tags was perfectly okay and not technically illegal. And now, this thread. Just my imagination, I'm sure. No offense intended, just a statement of observation.

I was thinking the same thing with the lead off comment about both being 4 speeds.
Unreal Jul 7th, 07, 08:28 PM I'd go for the X33 convertible. :)

With air and the 396 ...
I agree with William. I would personally prefer a X33 car.. actually I would prefer a document Van Nuys Z/28 with style trim.... but ultimately if the two cars where in similar shape I would disregard the tag and go for the car I liked best.

If as you state they are Xcoded cars(assuming the info is from the trim tag), they would have to be Norwood cars.

9T4Z Jul 11th, 07, 09:25 PM Probably just a young fellow, interested in Camaro s but not wanting to admit that he has yet to own one. I'd cut him some slack and not rub it in.
Still made an interesting topic...:beers:
