As close to the sump as you can get it and at or below the level of the sump. Most first gen Camaro owners build a plate to mount the pump and filter that is bolted to a bracket attached to the rear bumper brackets close to frame behind the rear pan.

I mounted the pump and filter in front of the tank. System works great.

I just mounted mine last week. Here's how mine is set up.

A 90 degree -10 to -8 fitting comes out of the sump to the passenger side. The -8 line runs upward from the sump at a 45 degree angle between the tank and the rear bumper, around the passenger side corner of the tank just over the seam tab which serves as a support, bends around the tank above the leaf spring toward the front into an inline pre-filter, then in and out the pump, then another filter, and down the framerail to past the firewall and up into the engine fuel rail. I fabricated a steel L bracket to mount the pump to the underside of the trunk just rear and above the axle. In that location it allows a straight shot for the fuel line to run from rear to front.

Those are nice pump mounting pictures but I have a cruiser. I mounted my Carter street pump up over right rear spring .

My pump is inside the tank, in that sump area. The lines are in front.
