It is my understanding there were two designs of the starter heat shield from the mid 60's to early 70's (on a number of chevy's, ...including Camaro).
Anyone know when the approx. swithcover was from 1st to 2nd design? ...I am trying to locate the correct one for my (04C) built '68 Camaro (396).
Thanks,
Kevin
...I believe the 2nd design is slightly larger than the 1st.

Kevin,
The starter heat shield (P/N 3954224) wasn't installed from the factory on the 1968 Camaro. This didn't start until 1969. Not sure about 1st or 2nd version.

Ed,
Thanks here as well ;)
...I didn't realize '68 never got the shield from the factory...

I've not heard of 1st or 2nd design, but I know the originals were stainless, and the later GM replacement was galvanized.

And if you want your engine to start, forget the shield and install an mini starter. My original starter is in the memory parts box. I finally gave up on it after 36 years. Tried shields (My original L78 didn't come with one) and wraps. I got tired of the engine just going 'Umph' and stop-cranking. Now it starts every time. Yep, Summit Racing.
