My comfy car show/concert canvas folding chair broke at the July 4th parade this past week. The plastic 3 way tie in piece cracked and let go but of course I cant google or locate any company that makes the chairs. Mine is from china and it has a company name located in upper Sibera or OneHungLo province but thats no help.
Any ideas on where I could get the plastic piece? I hate to toss a good chair for a 25 cent plastic part. I hate plastic. :(

I couldn't find any replacement parts when mine broke. I wired it together but it was funky... For the cost of a new chair it wasn't worth more effort to fix it better. I found new ones rated at 300lbs (not that I needed it) but figured they would hold up longer. Another benefit is if you have a jacket or coat on when sitting in one, because they are just a bit larger than the ones rated for less weight...

These bag chairs are a dime a dozen. I know some are more comfy than others. Maybe you could find a new chair with a similar part. I have seen these chairs sell for as little as $5.99.

Can it be epoxied back together ? I have a engine mount in a R/C airplane I epoxied back together about 5 yrs ago and is still holding up to fuel and vibration.
The slower the setting speed the stronger the bond like 30 minute or slower.
Granted I have never fixed a chair but numerous other things , the stuff has to be chiseled / ground off once it sets if you go to remove it.

My other guess cruise the interstate or highway and look for one that has taken flight out of a pickup truck or off an RV or maybe from a yardsale ...

I have broken that part several times on chairs. They seem to only have a two year life span. You can get nice ones with rockers or foot rests for under $15. Pitch it and get another one.

click
Jul 9th, 07, 12:38 PM
thats what Im guessing I have to do it pitch it but you know how us car guys like to fix things too... I might fuss with it as well as get a new one. If a guy could mold that piece and have $1.00 in it, then sell it for $2.50 to all the folks that break them, you could get rich :)

With that kind of entrepreneurial spirit, you should be running GM ! They'd be back to #1 in no time.

Take the part to a College or University machine shop and ask the instructor to have a student make one out of aluminum. Never know could get lucky.

Who knows maybe they could start marketing a $30.00 CNC aluminum part for a $6 chair, us car guys that like to hop stuff up will buy them.

Jim, I just picked up on of these type of chairs a OSH. I think it was about 25 bucks...I needed to get it for my back, after sitting for a few hours at the shows in those cheap folding type chairs, my back was toast. This one should be much better for the olde back area...:D

Watches, DVD players, VCR's, Cellphones, Stereo components,
$10 folding chairs. When these toys break, it is cheaper to replace than fix. We hate to fill up the landfills, but....my hypocrisy only goes so far.
Jim,
If you lived closer, I have lots of free folding chairs my Ins Companies give me. I would give you one. I could ship you one but the postage would kill me. It would be cheaper for me to mail you $10.

Wow! I thought I was the only one that would go through the effort!
I need to hold back sometimes or I would machine a block of aluminum to replace the part and 10 hours of work later fix a $5.00 chair. or....At the next car show find someone throwing another broken one away and spend 1 hour replacing the part. Thats just me . If it can be fixed I will try.

Jim , you can make it a poll but I think nearly half the guys want to see you fix the chair , me included. Anyone can throw it out and buy another but wheres the challenge in that. I mean this is Team Camaro we can fix anything. In fact get me some accurate dimensions and I'll machine one out of aluminum ( Billet:D ) as Mat suggested.

Jim, Costco, or Sams club have the real good taller folding chairs for 20.00 bucks or so. I think the name is Macabee or something like that. They are a bit taller, many times sturdier, and much more comfortable than that Oriental canvas cocoon style. Please save some brain cells, and get one of these, they are superior!

Now there you go... the snow ball effect is already starting and if not careful you won't have a chair to sit in all summer as you renovate, restorate and master... decorate (I wouldn't say that in the forums :D ) until you have completely put that chair through a complete frame off rotisserie process... I can see it, cup holders, magazine holder, retrofited bumper dumper, gun rack and built in animal calls. :beers:

Jim , Before I machine the lower part I need to know how thick the 'floor' needs to be. The black line shows where 5/16" would be , I just wanted to make sure before I make that cut.

That was an unexpected twist to the thread.

I was all set to say what a coincedince I broke the same chair, in the same spot, on the 3rd. Alcohol was the cause of death. Thankfully, the cooler behind me broke my fall, when it impacted my neck.

I love this forum, only here will someone not toss it out and buy another, but build a custom made, one-off, billet peice to replace a cheap plastic part :D

It's a trate some guys have that makes it necessary to fix something even when it's less effort to replace it. The skills used come in handy when the car breaks down and the cell phone is out of range. In the begining it took this trate to be a car guy. Today if you have enough money you can buy anything and the genes that supported that trate are becoming more and more resessive.

A perfect example is at 3 yrs old, a training wheel fell off my bike, mom used a wrench and put it back on to keep me from crying. It fell off again, I cried and she came out and put it back on leaving the wrench on the steps. It fell off a 3rd time but when mom came out to check on me she said I was using the wrench to take the other one off. I told her the one fell off again and I figured out I didn't need it and figured I don't need the other either... At 12 I took my brand new schwinn apart and put it back together after the 1st time I rode it... Just because I could! Compare that to my buddys son who raced motocross bikes since he was 5 yrs old, he's in his 20's now. He doesn't wrench on his bikes and would walk away if someone wasn't there wrenching for him...

PS. If you really want to buy someone a chair, I saw this really nice recliner the other day... :D

Ok guys, eat your hearts out... Im the proud owner of a spanking new billet aluminum braced folding canvas chair.

JR68 (Jerry) did a great job carving this piece and it fit like a glove. I ended up using cotter pins and small washers and it folds up like a champ. Now if he can only build a mold and make them from plastic to keep the cost down under $125 bucks ;) the labor alone has to be horrendous.
Enjoy the story, the end result was worth the wait and the fix. A small token of payment will be in the mail to him soon. Can you see the Team Camaro etched into the flat part? Its there
